I think they got hit by the downturn in the economy, much like a lot of businesses.

Either way, I think a deal is struck today, it just feels right....

Interestingly, nothing in the new CBA would prevent what Miami did last year. Other than perhaps a lower salary cap.

They should have done something with the max salaries.

Max salary needs to be changed. It shouldn't be limited by years in the NBA. Max salary for 1-10 years should be the same 10+ years.

It would allow the young stars(like Rose) to make more money earlier, after coming from a cheap rookie contract. It would address concerns about young players on cheap rookie contracts that succeed early, because they get larger initial extensions.

It would also help with competitive balance. The max salary for Lebron/Wade/Bosh would have been $19m/yr instead of $13.6m/yr. The Miami Heat would be looking at almost a 50% pay increase. One of them would have been on the way out.

I believe the lower salary cap and the restrictions on tax paying would make it harder to be successful doing that because it would make it much harder to fill out the roster afterwards.

Max salaries are based on the salary cap. Each LBJ/DW/CB would have still qualified for 30% cap(3 x 30%=90% team cap), whether it is higher or lower in real dollars. A lower cap and restrictions on tax paying would not have affected that outcome.

And I agree with that logic. The last thing any fan should want is for 3 or 4 players getting together and deciding on all playing together in one market with no financial consequences. Things like that can destroy one team over night and completely destroy what ever competitive balance there is in the league.

All teams should feel they have a legit shot at a championship if good decisions are made for the team and not just a few big market teams. And losing millions of dollars should not be a mandatory prerequisite for an owner to put a competitive team on the floor.

"salary cap" being the key here, considering it is one of the major issues at hand

I have a hard time thinking a deal will be struck in these small group meetings myself. I see these small group meetings as a way to come up with different scenarios to present to the group as a whole that they both know will or wont be accepted, make trades, and more or less discuss what they could take back to the group or respective hardliners on both sides. It can happen, of course, I just think we are another day or two away from a serious proposal sent back to the players.

-As for the individual teams losing money due to the economy, even if they say they have opened their books to the NBPA I have a hard time believing that the league as a whole recorded negative income. Take it from me, as someone whose job is basically to look at company financial statements all day long, Ive seen all the tricks of the trade on a balance sheet.

Of course, I will never get to see a Tax Return to truely let you know how the league did as a whole, but when Stern says that "our teams took 300 million in losses this year" there are lots of ways to interpret that statement.

I interepret the 300 million loss(coming from a lawyer in David Stern) to be just the sum of the teams individual losses before the overall league revenue gets taken into account. Thats why the new revenue sharing model is so important to the have nots in the league and why there has been internal discourse among the owners. I have to believe the gains from the other teams that were profitable, and the league revenue should have been enough to cover the losses taken by teams like Charlotte, Phoenix, etc. taking a 20 million dollar loss here, 5 million there.

Plus you cannot forget the revenue that comes from international tv deal, endorsements, jersey sales, etc.( You know, Yao Ming money) that gets spread amongs the teams.

While teams are individually losing money, the fact that the NBA has reported to have had a record breaking in year as far as fan growth and overseas growth to date should signal that the NBA as a whole did very well despite a horrible economic situation. I would be shocked if the NBA as a whole lost money, but I wouldn't argue with any owner that wanted to make changes in the revenue sharing model to keep smaller individual teams afloat.

Chris Sheridan just gave a lockout update -

There is one table in the newsconference room with 6 microphones and an NBA logo as a backdrop.

-Thats about it, but we all know they could easily switch the backdrop. Same people negotiating as yesterday so as I previously stated, I have a hard time believing they wont have to present options to a much larger group before accepting the deal to propose to the players and owners for vote.

For some reason I get the sense a deal will be reached within hours or has already been done. I have no idea why I feel this way.
