Thanks a million (or billion, pending the agreement!) It all makes sense; I'm embarrassed that I wasn't thinking of #2 and #3.

It is really then, as many have said, either about the long-term picture (to be really generous) or some mix of that with a big dollop of spite (much more likely.)

If they have no season at all they still have expenses with virtually no revenue. The Tv deals are tricky and the arena endorsements are sure to be taken back by vendors somewhat. I would say there is a real possibility that their Net Loss would be greater if no games were played at all given the cost of paying remaining front office staff & coaches not laid off alone could cost 30 to 40 million in payroll.

Im sure even the small market teams are better off gambling on having a season then not having one and still running day to day operations. What was said before about being better off not having a season was a hypothetical of completely shutting the doors and removing all expenses Im sure.

This is a precaution. Doesn't mean a deal will get done.

False. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the meeting lasts beyond the afternoon deadline.

Is that just about profitability...what about competitive parity....that is ruled as much or more by system rule changes...right? you don't have to answer this, here...in fact, I'd prefer you don't answer this in this news thread. I'd like to see an article by you one day about how the new CBA creates (or doesn't create) significant changes in producing competitive parity...not just profitability parity.

It was never about parity, it was all about profitability for the owners.

The players and owners cannot agree on anything, but now its mostly the system of the NBA (free agency, salary cap, etc.).

David Stern gave tonight as the deadline to get a deal done before the owners concievably offer a Worse deal than the one on the table.

The players, right this second, are trying to get a few system issues fixed to vote on a deal tonight.

So essentially, if the owners loosen up a few loose ends on the system, we could end this thing tonight. However, dont underestimate the power of pride. Your better off just checking the updates weekly than coming on here hourly and stressing out about it. Keep your expectations low.

Neither, its about Net Income. Its about your income exceeding your expenses. Its a guarentee that they will be in the negative if they have no season for sure given they still have expenses, but will have no revenue. If they have a season there is a chance to show a profit even if not likely.

I don't think a VOTE needs to occur today. Just the NBPA's executive committee's agreement to recommend a deal for a vote by the players.

Source says agents, players ready to go on decertification in 24 hrs if things go badly today. Also will watch to see if Hunter disclaims.

    ZachLowe_SI Zach Lowe
It's apparently possible for union leadership to disclaim and for players to go decertification route simultaneously.

(Note: That shouldn't be a huge surprise. Both sides prepared for every scenario, and to act fast).

disclaim won't happen. at this point, decert is the better route...should it lead to this.

Astute tweeps point out w/o rollbacks, players won't go down to 50 percent until year 3 of deal. So slight change in players' giveback ...

    KBergCBS Ken Berger
If assume player salaries/benefits stay flat at $2.17B for first two years and 50-50 split begins in Year 3, 10-yr concession is $3 billion.

    KBergCBS Ken Berger
That's $300 million/year on the nose, the precise amount of annual losses the owners were targeting. But is it enough?

    KBergCBS Ken Berger
It's not clear to me (or to union, frankly, as of last night) how new escrow system would work.

I know some want me to wake them up when this is over. But I really appreciate the intelligent questions/comments. You guys know your stuff.

Yeah, you're probably right. The NFLPA tried the disclaimer approach and lost in court.

A true petition and decertification vote may be more successful. And, as "luck" would have it, if the petition is submitted to the NLRB within the next few days, the actual decertification vote would be scheduled for right about the same time as the absolute drop-dead date for there to be a season.

Texting with a concerned agent. Asked him what happens if night ends without a deal. His reply: "Doomsday." #NBA

NBA labor deadline 30 mins away. Rumbles of optimism offset by equal doses of caution from sources saying Stern can only offer B-list tweaks'

Not counting on a verdict at 5 pm ET. Sides have consistently shot past deadlines to suggest they're really, really trying. Even if, well...
