Of course they are. Most of these players will only lose out with an even prolonged lockout, from lost wages during their few profitable years and being forced to take a worse CBA in which they will get less. The NBAPA is holding out right now base purely due to pride.

This can't be true. According to the union and some delusional members here, the players should hold out for a "fair" deal. Decertification is the first step to getting the owners to realize the players really mean business.

This is how mediation works, typically...particularly in issues where the emotions are high enough that having the parties in the same room would make things worse. This is very typical of mediation.

uhh, no, it favors bad management. a system that favors player movement (like a hard cap with less guarantees, like in the nfl) means that teams that make mistakes can get out of them quickly and teams that make successful moves will be forced to get rid of them more quickly as the system won't allow them a chance to keep those players as they want to get paid. that doesn't favor planning and wise cap management the way the current nba system does.

sure good management will still be better than bad management but it's like comparing a duel with machine guns and a duel with pistols with one bullet. i'd always rather be the guy with nerves of steel and great aim, but the machine guns don't make it nearly as important.

i get that, but you misunderstood my post. Raven said:

and i was just saying if new york and utah both have cap room and someone chooses new york, i'm not sure what we're supposed to do about that in the cba. they're probably going to lose that heads-up battle. now you could argue that if on a league wide basis lots of teams have to get rid of players because they are over the hard cap, then someone will have to take utah's cap room because that's all that will be left, but that still won't change the best players picking a new york/chicago/miami over utah/milwaukee/minnesota if both choices have cap room. you can't legislate geography, history, and culture.

According to ESPN this morning Kobe would be willing to take a 50 50 split... Basically the only way we are going to have a season is if the players who are willing to take the deal speak up and dont let the hardliners take control of a situation in which they probably dont really know too much about. Keep in mind though that i saw the news on ESPN this morning and we all know how credible they are.

More players need to speak up....Kobe is nearing the end of his career, he knows that a year lost is not good for him.

So the players and owners are trying to meet again to "tweak" a few things before the Wednesday deadline. I'm gonna go get the popcorn

that's a pretty good analogy. this has been a classic example of how not to negotiate on both sides. the players have seemingly been intent on letting pride and emotion get in the way from Day 1, basically opting for the "F you" route over the "take the best deal" route any time they could. and the owners have seemingly been intent on not only winning, but rubbing it in just to piss the players off into "F you" mode. it's like every time the owners could get what they want, they throw in a "take it or leave it" or ultimatum type comment just to make sure the players won't take it even if it's the best deal they can get. i mean sometimes ultimatum's are good just to get things going but like Woj said, they've won by 30 and instead of going to the lockerroom to celebrate, they'd rather see if they can get an acl injury for one of their stars just to make it 40.

Sorry - yeah, I misunderstood. I agree with you that you can't force people to pick Utah over NY. But you can at least make it more difficult for everyone to pick NY. I also think getting rid of S&T's and extending the ability for a current team to pay more for their own players would help. If Utah drafts well, give them a huge financial advantage to re-signing their own player and it makes it more likely that people will stay with their teams in crappy places.

The owners are not rubbing it in, they are simply negotiating a deal that resets the system for the good of the NBA overall.

It is mind numbing how many people are missing this point.

Scariest part of decertification push? The fact that some players w/ little understanding how it works are cramming for this final so late.

I completely understand desire to fight back when being fired upon, but that rocket launcher you're lunging for has some serious kickback.

Recent comment from an agent is stuck in my head in regards to insatiable owners: "How do you negotiate with a suicide bomber?"

With Stern clearly wanting to do a deal but unable to get control of his room, I love an idea proposed from the same agent...

    sam_amick Sam Amick
Stern saves his legacy by doing the best deal possible with union now privately, then jumps in front of media for handshakes and hugs...

    ...this deal wasn't enough.
