Japanese Haiku is 5-7-5 "on", which are shorter than syllables. It's not easy to do in English. I've seen English Haiku that tries to fit the Japanese style, and some that counts syllables. I think both are fun. The longer English ones just look odd to me, but that's just me.

Is "Yao" one or two or three syllables? LOL!

I don't understand what you mean??

I was taught that a Haiku was all about syllable count and nature. What is Japanese style?

Ah, I guess thins are getting lost in translation...

In English, that would be one.

Haiku originated in Japan, right? With 5-7-5 being the count of "on"s or how the Japanese count their sounds. A word like "June" would have 2 "on"s in Japanese (Ju+ne). When English speaking people tried to write Haiku in English, some just switched "on"s for syllables since that's how we divide up words. It works.

But other writers felt that wasn't quite true to the Japanese and they wrote English Haiku trying to capture the Japanese feel for the way Haiku looks and sounds, much shorter than the 5-7-5 syllables.

Also, Japanese always use something that refers to nature (trees, seasons, etc.) but a lot of English Haiku dropped that as well.

Anyway, not to be a boring history lesson...sorry.

I like both styles, no problem.
