It may not be honoring but it's hard to say it's offensive. The Annenberg study has credibility - it's not some partisan poll. 91% of a group saying they have no problem with it seems to mean that there really is no controversy here.

Still, the term was used to identify Native Americans and using it is against good taste. It's one thing to call yourself the Braves or the Seminoles and get backing from the local tribes...but Redskins? I mean, they have a freaking Indian on their helmets and then call themselves "redskins" - yeah, I can understand how that can be offensive.

You don't see the New England Patriots calling themselves the Whiteskins. I mean seriously, I thought we were beyond using colors to call out people's races?

All they have to do is change the name to something that isn't a racial slur. Or get rid of the Native American and make redskins stand for the color they wear.

Anyway, to me, the bigger problem isn't Washington, it's Cleveland, that cartoonish Indian - how is that still their logo???

I'm a white male and thought the name was probably offensive, but after reading an article on espn recently from a Native American writer I changed my tune, if they are cool with it so am I.

Oh and texxxx, give it up bro.

Could you link to the study? I'd be interested in reading it.

I'm not one to say it's an offensive name or not - I'm not Native American, so I can't really know. Although, I can agree with you that it is indeed in poor taste to have a team, in 2013, called the Redskins. We don't have teams called the Darkies or the Yellow Men, which certainly would be seen as offensive in this day. So, why is Redskins ok?

As said, the racist history of the franchise can't be ignored. Yeah, George Preston Marshall is dead and isn't charge of things anymore. But, you either acknowledge the full history of American teams or admit you're rooting for laundry.

Unfortunately, the history of the Redskins is that Marshall refused to sign a black player until 1961 before being threatened by Robert F. Kennedy to integrate or be kicked out of Washington DC. This was a man who, when he died in 1969, established a foundation that shouldn't benefit “any purpose which supports or employs the principle of racial integration in any form.” . Not only did he hate blacks, he "thought Redskins was funny, just as he thought the war paint and feather headdress he made the head coach wear were funny." Hell, he even had the Redskins band play "Dixie" before every home game.

A nice litmus test would be for defenders of the name to go to a reservation and full-throated, with out hesitation, address every Native American they met with "Hey, redskin!" Let their reaction be your guide.

I agree with your point about the Cleveland Indians. It's a racist caricature that, somehow, makes people think it's ok to dress like this:

I don't know who in their right mind would vote for a president who wants more of your tax dollars while at the same time inflating our currency basically double taxing you. Again I don't know how big a hitter you are bc in the stock thread you said you had a small stake in HIMX, so if you're in that $100-150k range you're not really wealthy and in many metropolitan cities wealthy are pretty middle class or below. So I assuming you make under $250k you're really not the AVERAGE obama voter, you probably have your reasons and that's fine but you're definitely not the norm......

also may I ask, are you happy with your decision to vote for him after all he's done thus far in his term?

    It makes sense.
    Cleveland Indians?
    Washington Redskins?

Let's picture it this way, if a team were named the [City] Africans and everyone started dressing up in black face and in tribal costumes would people be offended? YES.

If a team were named the [City] Asians and people dressed up in yellow face, brought chopsticks and straw hats, and slanted their eyes would that be considered racist? YES.

So why is it when the same scenario applies towards Native Americans / Indians that everyone automatically assumes its not racist?

Except plenty of other polls have shown completely different results. The polling on this topic with Native Americans has been all over the place.

Yeah, studies done by whom? Native American activist groups fighting to remove the names?

The annenberg study was done by a university at least.

    http://www.annenbergpublicpolicycen...munication/naes/2004_03_redskins_09-24_pr.pdf

You have to ask yourself how the studies could produce such different results. When they are that different - it points to the way the study was conducted. What was the methodology of these studies showing the opposite picture? Can you show these "plenty of other polls" that show otherwise with their methodology?

I don't think it's racist. The owner, the fans, none of them are intending to stereotype or discriminate.

What it is however, is grossly insensitive and sad that they would put their "tradition" above that over the feelings that their sport team they love so much has adopted. But I would think that it's the Cleveland Indians mascot that is really the one that is insensitive. I am not sure the Redskins one is really that big of a deal.

    I hope they do.

I'd like to read a Rick Reilly column explaining how he asked a few black folx and his father in law who once heard Jay Z say it and therefore it's OK and we should just disregard" white america" and its PC fascist goons.

What would owner Bob McNair of the Houston Texan Rednex think on this matter?

(Or should he even be putting time and thought into that matter, when he's got real pressing issues like a stuggling quarterback and losing team to address first?)

breaking: it appears they will in fact change the name of the team, due to public embarrassment.

    Moving forward, they will:
Remove "Washington" from the team name and simply be known as the Redskins
