- Lakers chose to sign Artest rather than keep the guy who kill us. - Bowen can kill many team but he got much more reasonable salary than Ariza.
Morey has never said he hoped or hopes ariza will turn into an all-star type. all he said was he promised Ariza a feature role. To me that doesnt mean he'll be our go to guy, that's crazy considering we have yao and tmac at the time and brooks was emerging. Sounds to me like he promised Ariza a starting job and/or starter's minutes. Basically the role battier played.......ideally you'd start him off slowly this year, increase his minutes next year and in year 3, 4, and 5 he plays big minutes, but sinxe yao and tmac were out Morey basically let him know it would be possible for him to get big minute right away. Next year his minutes will shrink some, then eventually Battier will be out after next season or he'll be limited if re-signed, and that's when Ariza's minutes will increase again.
They signed him to be a role player going forward, the problem is that he has never been all that great, and only in a very limited role...20mpg.... The Rockets have had several players keep up their percentages as their minutes increased, Trevor actually got worse.....why? Because he lacks the fundamental basketball skills necessary and gets exposed when he has to play bigger minutes. He is decent in a 20mpg role, and pretty bad in a 30mpg role. DD
i dont think that's right at all. He didnt simply stay in the same role and play more here. His role changed AND his minutes increased. That's what is making him look bad. I'd be surprised if once our stars are inserted into the lineup he keeps shooting as poorly, since then he'll be back to the role he played in LA. No current rocket, except for maybe Brooks, has had their role switch as dramatically from one season to the next. Their minutes increased, but in the same role. Even landry kept his sixth man role with increased minutes. Even Lowry, when playing more minutes, keeps his back-up-change-of-pace-pg role as well.
He needs to realize that he's not a shooter, and stick to his old niche of defense and slashing. On the season Ariza is shooting 38% from the field and 30% from behind the arc. What's worse is that he's 5th in the NBA in 3-pt attempts per game at 6.0. Unfortunately he only makes 1.8 out 6 on average. Meanwhile, last year with the Lakers, he only averaged 2.3 attempts per game, shooting at a 32% clip. Well, he doesn't have Kobe around anymore, and he'd not getting anymore wide open looks. Yet he considers himself a volume shooter, and is heaving up way too many bricks. Ariza is quickly turning into another Larry Hughes.
What about another wing that could hit 3s once Yao is back? We didn't get him for this season, we got him for next. People here tend to think we got him and expected him to all of a sudden become a dominate player. That will take years, if it even happens. He's good on a good team. Right now he's average on a average team.
They signed him cuz they thought he was gonna develope real quick into an all star, based On how he performed in the playoffs..which hasn't happened and doesn't look to happen Anytimes soon
Exactly, the problem is that Trevor has really hurt his own value by trying to do too much. Maybe if they can start CBud with him and take the pressure off of him he can start performing better and raise his value. DD
you have to put Bud at the 2 and get Trevor in the 3. Bud is a better ball handler and would be better at SG. this whole turn Trevor into a SG idea is stupid. It limits his matchups and his quickness to get around and get to the basket(I know).
Honestly I am not sure Bud can be a SG either.......we really could use a true SG on this team, the only one we have is JT, and he is not even remotely NBA ready. That is why I want Von or McCants......at least this year. DD
Because he was cheap.for some reason we always sign cheap players. And think were going to win rings.Yao is not good enough to carry cheap players to a ring.I though we replaced CD.
Isn't this a bit of revisionist's history? No one, not even Morey or Budinger could have known how well Budinger would be doing at this point. Morey has said time and time again that he likes taking lots of small shots at hitting the prize. Most of his picks are going to fail, but he'll hit big more often than the average guy. Budinger has been a great surprise, but ticket sales would have been abysmal if the team had been counting on him.
What? The Rockets are getting Kobe, Gasol, Bynum and Odom? The fact is unless Morey pulls a Dorsey/Cook for Lebron/Dwight Howard deal this team will never have the type of talent to HIDE Trevor Ariza behind. He somewhat fit in LA because they needed length and defense on the perimeter to help hide Fisher's slow feet. They also needed a guy who was a good three point shooter. Trevor isn't that but he pretended he was at exactly the right time. What role do you foresee this guy playing when he can't score the ball? Yeah, I guess he could be plugged in and help a team loaded with scorers (like LA) but when has this team ever been that and what makes you think it ever will be? And even if that happens since when do you start bringing in overrated role players before you even have a role for them that they can succeed in? I am getting tired of this guy and the excuses for him. Look at his career numbers. He's a journeyman who never got much time until he landed on a team that had a gaping hole at SF but was loaded at nearly every other position. At all his other stops he rode the pine like he needs to be doing now.
following up on my first post... before this season started, after we had signed ariza, i revisited the series Lakers vs Rockets. Ariza shines against us in that series. i didn't catch anything that the Rockets did that was significantly wrong, other than Von Wafer continuously turning the ball over. it's just that Ariza blew us away. i'm sure that he presented a significant problem for Adelman.
Ariza vs. Rockets in 2009 NBA Western Conference Semi-Finals: 10.1 PPG 4.3 RPG 2.0 APG 50% FG 28.8 MPG Not a bad series for a role player but he hardly "blew us away" and only a fool would believe he would consistently shoot as well as he did in that series over the rest of his career when looking at his numbers before last year's playoffs.
i really cant believe you guys ariza has had less of a chance to prove himself than conan did on the tonight show, way too many people are quick to judge him. there is a lot that has to improve on obviously but its just not going to happen this year... seriously all of you guys set expectations for him and this team in a year where this team was going to go no where, even if those expectations were low they rose after the initial surprising start for the team. it was just a matter of time that the players and this team comes down to earth. ariza was signed but the team did not expect him to be "the man" but with the injuries to yao and the situation with mcgrady that has happened to him this year. a much better view of the signing should be next year when yao is back and whoever else is on the team from the trade of mcgradys contract.
Yes, he can be a role player but now his salary is higher than his lakers salary and higher than bowen... And his defense is not the same level as bowen...
