Though I agree in principle that it does take time for rookies, Ill even give you the three years part, but when year one is going to be nothing but scrap minutes and sitting the bench then it kinda throws a wrench in that argument. But seriously, its like some people are lost in Rockets Land when it comes to draft picks. I was a bit shortsighted for the OP to make such comments, but for all those who want to say "how do can you tell after half a season", Id tell you my rebuttal to that would be one word simply. HISTORY. History tells us questionable second round draft choices (ahem taylor) who get no burn their first year (ahem kinda like a Dorsey) aren't going to do squat in the NBA. Ill take a tip jar bet over Llul and Taylor not being any significant player in the NBA over the next three years with anyperson willing. I might even be inclined to say the same about Chase. Look, the OP had at least a small amount of correctness behind his post. Add the fact that we paid 6 million for these three players who HISTORY tells us, more than likely will never pan out, seems a bit crazy.
Oh forgot to mention. We do this almost every year. Dan Langhi Jason Collins Rodrick Rhodes (remember the MJ stopper..LOL) Boki Nachbar Bryce Drew Michael Dickerson Kenny Thomas Othella Harrington Malik Badine Luther Head Steve Novak Id even say that Dickerson, Harrington, Head were further along their rookie years than Chase and what became of these players? So this year its Chase. I guess we will see. Yes Brooks and Landry turned out well but for the most part the we can kinda get the idea here right.
I agree: it will take 2-3 years to understand what these guys are really gonna give us. There have been cases of guys coming out big and fizzling out, and there have been opposites that lay low and then explode. Adjustment and equilibrium of both the player and the league's reaction to that player. The real question: How long does it take a Clutchfans BBS rookie to develop? How long until they show what they really have? *don't look at my lurker numbers and judge plz *
Sergio Llull <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1oQD2skTnvI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1oQD2skTnvI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> He'll either be on this team in 2011 or he'll be part of a trade.
First, it should be stated, we had no picks in that draft in either round. Next, we knew from the start, that we probably weren't getting back Artest or Wafer without overpaying them and Barry was probably pretty much retired at that point. So our only swing player was Battier. We needed the bodies in the SG and SF position. So essentially, while none of our draft picks might become superstars in the NBA, they help the team in different ways from just being training bodies and their potential as players.
So you thinly their production will increase as one is bench ridden and the additions of Ariza and Martin. Interesting.
Lowry increased their production while riding the pine. Scola, Landry, Brooks all rode pine and improved. Hell, even Dorsey improved.
Still do now want Blair now. He is just undersize and he does not have the smarts of Scola, defense of Hayes as well as the explosive of Landry. Its not like his the 2nd coming of Charles Barkley or Ben Wallace. I take every single PF/C in the current rox squad over Blair, yes even Cook who at least can shoot.
You're on. $20 bet for the Tip Jar over Llull "being a significant player in the NBA over the next 3 years." The only caveat is that one of us needs to remember it, or someone else, and I'm betting on Llull. That's a long time down the road.
Yeah, since your argument hinges on a large man without anterior cruciate ligaments, I guess the "everybody who didn't draft him automatically FAILED" routine is one that you have to do sooner rather than later.
We wouldn't have even been able to buy Blair. I don't think Buford would want to deal with Morey anymore.
Can someone explain to me, how the hell do you play withought any ACL's? I don't blame Morey at all for passing up on the guy. No ACL's sounds terrible.
Wheres Cuttino?! How in the world can you say Othella was further along than Chase? Yea, its a crap shoot for late first-any second round picks, but what team doesnt miss on them? They are low risk, thats why some of these guys get picked...they exhibit low risk/high reward situations. Here's the bottom line of this whole thread/argument that makes the OP look ridiculous....WE HAD NO PICKS! Yea we spent 6 million dollars and a future 2nd to acquire 3 guys but that has no implications on our present day team (except for the 2nd round pick). That money came straight out of Les's pocket not from our budget/cap. Now unless your name is Les Alexander or Mrs. Alexander who wanted a new diamond necklace and Rolls Royce, you have no reason to be sour about this. This draft being called a failure because we didnt draft Dajuan Blair and apparently because none of our guys arent in the top-5 of NBA talent today makes about as much sense as walking down the street and finding a 20 dollar bill on the ground, and then thinking to yourself "FAIL!" because it wasnt a 100 dollar bill.
i've no knowledge whatsoever about lull and his abilities, so i've no idea how he'd fare in the NBA. But based on this video, which im guessing was intended to promote him, I was left skeptical, unimpressed and underwhelmed. Of course this is but a 4minute sample highlighting just a few plays, but I didnt see anything special or remotely interesting.
How can you tout picks turning into "projects" like it's a good thing? Most every failed draft pick can be characterized as a "project" while he rots on the bench until he's out of the league or thrown into a trade to make the money match. Joey Dorsey says "Hi."
