I knew I'd see it in my lifetime, because I'm pretty young. I was a bit nervous when the early vote returns started coming in and McCain was winning them all. I was beginning to think that the youth vote had once again failed to show up. I think I saw that the percentage of young voters was still the same as 2004, so I was right and wrong.
next election that doesn't involve Obama... I better see African American votes coming in. Where was this voter turnout last election? Get with the program fellas!
You have an awesome heart. I am so glad you post here. Let us walk our talk in a manner that God's blessings can fill our country. Thank you for the thread. John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
Can someone clear this up? Why is he considered only African American and not 1/2 African American and 1/2 Caucasian? As a person of mixed race there's no way I could turn my back on my mother and only claim my father's race. As a side note I always had a hard time in filling out forms which ask me to check which what race I am Carry on
same here, I am 1/2 African American and 1/2 Caucasian, but I don't claim to be 100% African American like Obama does and how people claim he is 100% African American.
I keep the stash at home, instead of at church. Acts 17:27 “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us."
For the same reason Tiger woods is considered African American even though he is more Asian than anything else.
You know, the dude is 1/2 white. Where's the love intellectualism , empathy, shared social responsibility and opportunity, and the advancement of mankind in general? ( I hate to be Debbie Downer on this momentous day, but I still have doubts about how this election would have gone if the same man had been of 100% Kenyan heritage with more melanin pigment. Maybe it's just because I'm 55 and grew in a segregated South, but the discrimination I have witnessed seemed insurmountable. Nonetheless, any step is a good step, I'm ecstatic with what was achieved.)
I expected it at any time. I'm not suprised to see a black man become President. To me it just shows that people see something that isn't always there. I am not happy today. I've got 2 years of unopposed Democrats.
Tiger is 1/2 pure Thai on his mother side and 1/2 mixed race on his father's side ( Black , Cherokee and other), so by a plurality he is Thai.
Next election where the candidate is worth voting for maybe you will see it. How about not singling out Afro Amer. Voter turnout was increased substantially across the board. So next time I better see All Americans making the same type of effort
He is seen as black due to America's double standard in which all of us are guilty at some point of harboring. Even mixed races. A BLACK MAN is in office and as an Afro American. I dont expect him to give blacks handouts. I rather see him help bring all Americans together in order of strengthening this country. For us Blacks he provides the hope that instead of excuses some people give, anything is possible and we must be accountable for our actions and thoughts. We CAN make it regardless of the circumstances. And that is not only for one minority that is for ALL Americans. This man challenged the status quo. Challenged our inhibitions, challenged our prejudices, and ill conceived thoughts. He challenged us to think outside of our normal realm. The importance of this election truly is the change it speaks. But that change is in All AMericans to stop excuses and hatred and prejudices and start thinking and doing and coming together for the greater good. Because if America thrives it wont matter your race gender or creed. SORRY. Let me get off my soap box. Dammit I want to hug a white person right now
It's like in dogs, anytime a Labrador Retriever breeds with another breed of dog it comes out a Labrador mix because the Lab gene is just so dominant. Actually it relates to race laws that some Southern States enacted after the Civil War defining race by percentage of heritage, specifically in Louisiana where mixed races were more prevalent. Most of these laws referred to anyone of 1/8 or even 1/16th black heritage as "black". Sounds like it would make an interesting research paper for you ..... give me a 1000 words, due on Friday. (research clue: look up Homer Plessy)
You beat me to it. I was thinking last night that I would throw up a similar post today... but I don't think it's a tie. The moon landing was great, but last night took tens of millions of Americans acting in concert.
Turn the clock back a couple hundred years, you'd be in the fields picking cotton regardless that you are half white. If you grew up in your parents era, you could NOT drink from the same water fountain in many parts of the country. THAT is why you are African American. I'm mixed as well ...and I never forget that in THIS country, I'm all black regardless of the fact that I'm proud of my personal background. This is not only a great moment in African American history. It's a great moment in American history. It's a great moment in WORLD history. In our lifetime, we may never experience something like this again. This is a reminder to the world of why America is the greatest country on earth. We've done something no country has ever done.
