    1) Advanced individual defensive stats are meaningless.

    2) A defensive anchor alters the other team's offense. Shot blocking is a part of it, but there are other equally important things like timing, positioning, quickness, recovery, etc.

    3) I'm sure Sengun's abilities/ratings are better if you take out the players that don't suit him but that's not how a team is made and that's not how the NBA works. An NBA defensive anchor makes the defense better by being there. If the guards are bad at defense, they will be less bad. Sengun can't do that yet. A defensive anchor improves everyone's defense, that's why they're key.

    Not when he was 20, like Sengun is today. He only made it back to the NBA at age 27 or so.

    I don't think you need a thread to defend Sengun. Most fans can see his improvements. Last year he was probably one of the worst defenders, this year he is at least serviceable. He is only 20 and we only paid him a little over 3m a year, that's no need to be too harsh on him.

    Min 702 minutes played. Our current starters. It's sorted by defense. But also look at the TOT (defense and offense) :(

    Matches the eye test.

    Has the self-proclaimed "best defender" seen this?

    Jabari has simply been awful all-around.

    And Jalen's defense is non-existent.

    They are both young.


    One more chance with some proper coaching staff before I would give up on them.

    But our mid first-round picks have been outplaying our top picks on both ends of the floor, plain and simple.

    Thanks for posting this!

    I did want to point out this stat tends to favor guards (per RAPTOR's explanation), so Jalen Green's numbers are more concerning.

    KPJ has been often criticized on this board, but his offense has greatly improved and it's now somewhat efficient with multiple advanced stats. KPJ's other defensive advanced stats are concerning w/ DBPM, etc, so I'm not sure if he's average or below average on defense. It's difficult to tell due to playing a lot with Green. Either way, his contract is really good for the production we're getting, but we need to use him differently.

    Jabari Smith has sucked. It's a simple as that. He's only 19, so I won't judge him for at least 2 years.

    KMJ's numbers aren't as bad as they seem when playing with Sengun, but he gets frozen out by Green/KPJ. I would be against extending KMJ, as his poor defensive IQ is overshadowed by his amazing blocks and athletic display. I'd rather sign someone like Grant Williams

    Sorry to go off track - just wanted to comment on some additional points.

    Literally the "self can't play Kanter"

    That's below average.

    Can anyone name 5 starting big men that are demonstrably worse than our "above average" defensive center?

    Serious question - i have not tried to do this myself
