Gasol has a higher Defensive Win Share , DefRebounding% , Defensive Box rating than Capela. He is in no way over the hill or worn down like Nene. Still moves well.

Not on Gobert's level, but he is a huge bonus to have defensively. Getting him for junk is far more valuable than another redundant SF with glaring flaws, if he picks up his option he is a huge expiring contract next year for a team that will be over the cap. that's called an asset. He may extend for cheap if things go well.

Any move they make now to better the team will involve trading away existing contracts and this is not affected by Cp3's salary at all. The only thing it would’ve changed is that the team would’ve been further away from the luxury tax line, but other that, this is spot on. Bringing CP3 back was really the only option for the Rockets to have a second elite player to pair with Harden for the next few years, while keeping Capela in the process.
