First, hardly anyone here (including DD) thinks Brooks is a superstar. Second, Brooks was our best player this year, whether you like it or not. Our team was not big enough and talented enough to have a lot of wins this year. Portland stayed afloat even after injuries since their three best players were never out for an extended amount of time. Brooks is a good player and he is a good fit here in Houston. We also have a very good back up in Lowry, so unless we are being offered Paul or Williams, we really don't need an upgrade at our PG position. The champions of this past decade have all had scoring point guards (this excludes Rondo) so I don't see what huge argument anyone has here for a "true" point guard. If you want one of those, sign Steve Blake and see how far that takes you.
Excuses excuses. I thought the McGrady era was over. Brooks is a shooter and not a PG. Lowry is a much better player than Brooks at the PG position. There is also a logical and very sensible reason why the PG is a recognized and respected position in the NBA. There is a reason why it is even mentioned as a postition in the NBA. No amount of denial from fans and bbs posters will change that.
I think "much better" is pushing it. A few things: 1) Lowry's statistics are a result of the minutes he plays. Lowry plays with a lot of hustle on offense and defense. If you gave him 12-14 more minutes a game (starter minutes), do you think he would be able to produce at the same level? Case in point: Carl Landy in Houston vs in Sacramento. 2) Lowry's role is completely different than Brook's role. Lowry's role is to come in off the bench and provide energy and create baskets for others (something he is very good at). Brook's role is to score. Lowry could never average 20 points a game. You couldn't give the ball to Lowry and ask him to put points on the board late in a game. Brooks is the better scoring option by far. Lowry is the better role player by far. 3) Brooks is a scorer, not a PG. But so was Mike Bibby. Lets not act like Brooks is Luther Head at the PG position, he has the ball handling skills and maturity to handle the PG role. He just doesn't see the court as well as a Chris Paul or Steve Nash is all.
.........................wut. Just, wut. I literally do not understand what you mean "the PG is a recognized and respected position in the NBA." Um, yeah, PG is a position. it's not exactly respected or recognized more than any other position, and given the track record of elite passing PGs, probably less so than a tall center (well, maybe they're "respected" more because PGs get more ESPN highlights than centers, but whatever.) And as others have said, you do not need an assist-first elite PG to win anyways. Brooks right now is perfectly good, and I would in fact argue that we need another BACKUP PG, as someone needs to fill in for Lowry when he gets injured crashing the lane.
It makes sense to get Bosh AND to keep Scola. Somebody else had already made this point but I'll make it again. Yao takes up 25 minutes max. Bosh takes up around 35 min. Now the PF & C positions together need 96 minutes. So there is still 36 minutes missing. This is where Scola should fill in the gap. Basically whenever Yao isn't in the game we move Bosh to C and Scola to PF. Its not that complicated...
I would go after Haywood, he knows theres minutes to be had at the center position, In addition, a shot at a championship will also be another incentive to come here... plus you can't teach 7'0 with a 7'7 wingspan --RB

If Les were willing, I rather just sign Bosh as a Free agent, and just have the team briefly hit with a luxury tax (we still wouldn't necessarily have the most expensive team in the league or one of the top 5). It's funny, because if we get Bosh, then improve in a few areas, but lose overall depth. Still, lack a good defensive center to have against teams, like the Lakers, while losing two forwards (Chase Budinger and/or Ariza or Battier) and even a point guard Brooks or Lowry.
*sigh* We have no cap space to sign him as a free agent. Sign-and-trade is the only way, barring Bosh going insane and agreeing to the MLE. Welcome to NBA salary cap 101...
