Only in copies and reproductions during the 20th century. The only thing of Michelangelo's that was altered was the Last Judgement on the wall of the Sistine Chapel. The pope thought there were too many penises for a chapel so Michelangelo had to paint pants on the figures. But later it was deemed OK and the pants were removed. But, yeas, the David sculpture has caused endless controversy and has at times been protested when it has entered the US. The most recent (and local for some) controversy was here in Houston when a stripmall that was trying to look Italian put a copy of the culpture on top of an Oshmans sporting goods store and soccer moms complained. The owner either covered the evil penis or removed the statue, I cannot remember. Some people (generally Christians) are apparently still upset that Savonarola didn't get his way back then of desroying all work of the Italian Renaissance.
I understand that this is not your point for this quote but I have never understood this argument. Just because the majority of people think something is right or wrong does not make it so.
Yes I read the article but I don't think he addresses the point of why these are lifelong appointments in the first place. For practical purposes, I belive they are lifelong positions and appointed positions to aviod the politics that goes with campaigning in the other branches of government. And this issue is a perfect example. The Supreme Court shouldn't be subject to whims of the prevailing thoughts of the electorate because one sentimental case. It makes sense and it has made sense for over 200 years. Yes people live longer, but I'm sure that the framers of the constitution anticipated some members of the Court lasting over twenty years. Not everyone died at the age of 50 in those years. If they felt it neccessary to put a term limit on the Supreme Court they would have done so.
Oh I agree 100% The last election was a prime example! But Delay is throwing out stupid **** like threatening judges and claiming personal persecution over an issue that Americans clearly feel should be a personal family matter.
Yea, that was before he used threatening language against Republican appointed judges. His days are numbered. He is pissing off everybody now.
After Delay's melodramatic, insincere, grandstanding speech on the Terry S. situation, I can't believe anyone would take him seriously. That was one of the most pitiful displays I've seen. It was sickening and shameful, to play off a tragedy the way he did.
But now when people think Delay, they think Terry instead of ethics violations. Mission accomplished.
what would be wrong with some long term limit like 18 years (i don't get how it relates to the schiavo case)? i mean it would be nice if they had their full mental faculties while serving. and as long as you can only serve one term--be it lifetime, 18 years, or 4 years--how does that endanger the protection from public whim inherent in the lifetime term? i mean, once you're in, you're in for 18 years and no one can do anything about it so you don't have to answer to anyone or please anyone. and it would also end the practice of just hanging around until a president of your liking is in power. i'm not saying we desperately need term limits or anything but i certainly don't see anything wrong with them if they are of sufficient length.
