That's same for every height. For evey Yao Ming, there is a Big Country, Shawn Bradley, Georghe Muresan, and Manute Bol. Well, maybe the ratio changes the taller you go. The stiffs seem to outnumber the decent big men by 4-1.
I think our situation is unique in that our primary scoring option is Yao Ming. Yao requires players to get him the ball in the low post to be effective. He also requires that the entry passer pass the ball directly to him, as he's not good with lob passes or catching the ball outside his area. This, I think, puts a higher premium on guards who can deliver the ball to him at the right spot, at the right time. Brooks, because of his stature, has struggled with this. He can't pass over the top, and that greatly reduces his passing angle. We got other guys on the team like Battier, Artest, and Barry who'll be more effective at that entry pass. It would just be nice if our primary ball-handler had adequate size to be a very good entry passer as well. Without McGrady, that's no longer the case.
It didn't seem like you were talking about the Rockets in your previous post but I do agree that an entry passer with height feeding Yao helps compensate for Yao's lack of athleticism and mobility. This is more true with Yao than most other bigs. Yao requires more precision than any other big in the league. In general though, it seems like most championship teams have had smaller PGs, with few exceptions.
Aren't there always going to be a less number of exceptional players as opposed to those stiffs? But anyway, yeah I get you. but the point I was trying to make is that physical attributes alone don't make someone good or bad. That doesn't change for any height.
Most teams, overall, have smaller PGs. What's the average height for PG -- 6'2? Go back 20 years (post-Magic) and see how many of the championship teams had a PG smaller than that. And, yeah, in our situation I think it would be particularly useful.
durvasa, I just went back and took a quick glance at the championship teams from the past 20 years. The only PG I can recall that was above average in height on those teams was Chauncey. There was probably a couple others. Did Harper play PG for the Bulls or was it Paxson and Hodges? There were plenty other smaller to average height PGs like Fisher, Avery Johnson, Isiah, Jason Williams, Rondo and Parker. And your original statement was a generic "I like PGs with size." It didn't sound like you were specifically saying "taller than Brooks" or "taller than Lowry" so that is what I was feeding off. I thought you were saying you liked PGs that were taller than the average PG.
Harper was nominally the PG for the Bulls during the second 3-peat. He was also the PG during the first Lakers championship. There were some other big PGs that made it to the Finals without winning it all -- Derek Harper, Anfernee Hardaway, Gary Payton. I guess I'll put it this way. All else more or less equal, I like PGs with size for the reasons I gave. That doesn't mean I'm not a big fan of talented smaller PGs. I think Chris Paul is far and away the best PG in the league both this season and last season, and he's 6'0.
the trade for kyle lowry has made us more efficient. brooks is more efficient than rafer and lowry gets to the free throw line a lot. efficiency wins games.
You'd think that after having Calvin Murphy on this team no one would care about AB and Lowry's height. They're point guards, it doesn't matter how tall they are. Chris Paul and Tony Parker made the all-star game, I think short guys can manage.
If im not mistaken Aaron has a long wingspan and a nice vertical to make up for him being "undersized". Off topic,Aaron needs to be more aggressive. If this team was his I have no doubt in my mind he could average 20ppg. Im excited for him to be a starter for us.
i mean you can bump it if we play the jazz, but if you think its a 1 man show then we deserve to lose we wouldn't be a team then. What did the jazz do in the 90's when they played Utah, would stockton just not play because payton was 6'5 and could post him up all day? AB did just fine against Chauncey who is a big guard himself. AB has quickness that nobody has and he can be an effective defensive player like AI has been over the last decade. Speed kills in the NBA did you see AB get in the paint last night and go side to side under the basket, that kind of flow really keeps the other team on its toes all the time unlike rafer getting the ball and slowly taking it up the court and dropping it to Yao. Don't even get me started on the speed at which we played when TMAC was on the court
amen on this... yeah AB is going to be an effective player despite not being tall. He's good and I think his being small is why he's so dangerous. He knows he can attack fast and hit the three... those are the best two things to have looming on a defenders mind. He's ice cold as well... and with that sort of image... I'd be scared to go against him.
