It must have tricked me and SIlas because even SIlas said after the first game he decided not to run plays as much not sure if he changed agaiin since then. Those stats maybe correct for how they define it but Ive watch every nets game and when I look at brooklyn it looks almost 80% iso when durant or harden are on the floor. Usually Harden is given the ball at some point and he goes one on one or gets a pick and passes the ball. It would be helpful to see what their criteria for iso is. I see the same thing with KPJ more often that not i see him trying to break down his man and either turning it over or taking a bad shot. I may have to do something ridiculous like count each iso possesion tonight LMAO.

Yeah, the Houston Rockets going forward should never try to repeat what Harden did. He was amazing, but the rules changed, the league changed and team basketball is everything now. If you want to shine, do it on defense like Giannis did.

Great eFG% and TS% indicate that there have been some open shot opportunities.

Do they? I generally see contested shots and missed open shot oppotunities. Not all of that is on SIlas some is bad vision by KPJ and others. Isnt there a stat that shows open shot opportunities relative to the rest of the league?

I'm sure that stat exists somewhere. In any case, the goal on offense is to score efficiently, and the Rockets have apparently been doing that this far. Getting an open shot is a means to that end; the end itself is getting the bucket.

If you find this anywhere let me know. I know this is a thing that teams track internally and I think second spectrum has it, but AFAIK it's not available anywhere publicly.

    Compiling data from nba.com:

Houston Rockets: FGA per game 86 ; FGM per game 39

Open (defender is 4-6 feet away):
    FGA per game: 25.3
    FGM per game: 10.8

Houston is currently ranked 16th in the league in this scenario

    Wide Open (defender 6ft+ away):
    FGA per game: 16.3
    FGM per game: 7.8

Houston is currently ranked 5th in the league in this scenario

If you add both "open" shots together you get:
    FGA per game: 41.6
    FGM per game: 18.6

So for when it's a wide open shot (regardless if it's a layup, mid range or 3) the Rockets are shooting 44.7%. I would have to calculate the entire league's data but I would say (based on where we rank in each of the specific scenarios) somewhere in the teens...maybe slightly better than average?

Average isnt bad but its not all that good either. There are areas there that can be improved. Now if we could only try to understand his rotations lol

lol for sure I agree on the average quote. I mean I guess the silver lining here is that when a Rockets shooter is ridiculously open they are hitting their shots. Maybe Silas needs to lean in on this fact and try to get more of his players open shots, within those crucial 14 seconds of course.

Considering that we are giving so much playing time to guys who only recently reached legal driving age, I think being slightly above average on generating open shots is good.

This exactly. For our roster, our shot quality and scoring efficiency are pretty damn good. But we lead the league in turnover %. That’s what is really killing the offense.

Even before rule changes, nobody should ever try and do what Harden did. I don't think anybody else could have done it that way and been successful. James has a very particular skillset, I'm not sure I could honestly say I've ever seen another player play the same way, he's his own archetype.

    More shots with more pace.

Easy offense, early offense means less half court defense.

    Defense>Offense.

    His system in a nutshell:

Let the players figure out how to score, pass, and communicate all on their own with no preparation beforehand.

Make no in game, or game to game adjustments.

All I heard before the season was how young we were and how fast we were gonna play fast because of how young we are and then only 2 rookies get playing time lol It's not going how he described.
This is one reason I didnt understand why they removed Brad Stevens from the Celtics bench dude would be perfect here.

Adding more to my previous post with a bunch of numbers:

The Rockets are currently 17th in the number of FGs attempted when the nearest defender is between 4-6 ft away and 24th when the defender is 6+ ft away. Not surprising, the team is also 28th in the league in number of passes made per game. What could be one of the causes for this? Houston is 17th in the league when it comes to drives per game. Driving to the basket, of course, could put the defenders in a situation where they have to collapse around the paint thereby leaving shooters open in the perimeter. Unfortunately, when the team do drive to the basket, they only pass 35% of the time, ranking 24th in the league. But if they don't pass that often, that means they should score at a higher clip right? Unfortunately they're 19th in FG% on driving plays.

"So what the hell is happening?"

Well, on driving plays alone, they turn over the ball an average of 5 times a game, tops in the league. If I were to base everything on numbers alone, it boils down to:

While this team can hit open shots at the league average or better, they aren't getting enough attempts in these situations because the dribble drive penetration for Houston isn't yielding enough passing (well Houston isn't passing all that much to begin with) and ball movement and turning the ball over (common theme so far) is wrecking havoc on any potential they might have to score.

Which is why everyone has been so hard on KPJ. But as a coach you need to recognize this is happening and find other avenues. Like starting Sengun and running cutters around him.

I'm all on board the Sengun train since I first saw him in Summer League. I think he can be the initiator on offense at the top of the 3 point line and find the open man better than KPJ. That being said, I don't get why Silas hasn't tried to experiment with what Hornacek did in Phoenix when he started both Bledsoe and Dragic in the backcourt. They not only scored but also were given ball handling and playmaking duties. KPJ and Green won't yield the same results since they're still young but that should alleviate some of the pressure off of KPJ to deliver (thereby cutting down on his TOs). This will also require Silas to start running actual plays though.

This doesn't surprise me. You can see it in games. I genuinely think they've got KP's head all ****ed up with the PG thing. A lot of the times he could finish he throws a last second threaded bounce pass that leads to a turnover, and I KNOW he could (and last year would) finish that at the rim instead. He looks like he's trying too hard, which is obviously better than too little. I think once he slows it down and let's it flow without trying so much he'll turnover less and finish more, which in turn will open up better passes to the perimeter then these last second 2 ft bounce passes the other guy isn't expecting.
