He's stuck in a relatively thankless position. We're extremely young and will be for the foreseeable future. Next two to three years are all about getting the young guns as much experience and playing time as possible.

Under Van Gundy, we would see Wall and Gordon play 30 mpg in the preseason. Not the greatest coach to build young talent.

A bit more structure would definitely generate better shots. We need open looks unless winning is not a super priority again this year.

You can easily win a job with cool presentation what you are going to run. But then you have to have balls to implement it. This dude is not implementing **** he just micromanaging. I wanted JVG from the start he could make our youngsters great..... If we just let them run on offense Jeff could handle it. Just 'vibe with each other" offense is what we run. But at least we would be defensively competent

If he would be that great coach he would get job sooner than after 20 years of being second coach.

He was hired for a team that had Harden and Westbrook running things on the floor. Now that it is a bunch of 19-year-olds, they need someone who can really teach. So, while we all realize he isn't a long term coach, the change needs to happen now. Having these guys just run around with no clear direction hurts long term as much as it does right now. They probably need to get someone from the college ranks.

I feel it's like McHale's system only less clapping and yelling play harder.

He said that in one of his press conferences leading up to the start of preseason. He wasn’t going to run sets but use the preseason to allow the players build chemistry.

It’s also only game 2 of the preseason. We will have a better of what the team identity, offense and defense will look like by mid-season form.

Everyone needs to step away from the ledge and chill for a bit. Everyone needs to do a better job managing their expectations as well. I feel a lot of folks haven’t moved on from the success of the Harden years and expecting wins and good offense flow in the preseason with a team full of young players and rookies.

I’m pretty sure he is just a crappy coach. They are playing pick up ball out there, have been since he got here. I haven’t seen any structure or semblance of a plan.

It's a circle the wagons blitz offense followed by a "call in the calvary"
    (Christopher/Brooks/Garuba) scheme.

Used in the Russian league often

Too early to tell. He is experimenting with rotations and chemistry. Tate makes a world of difference on defense as does Gordan when energized. House has to go. Theis’ defense has been disappointing so far, but that could just be a learning thing while playing with Wood. Seguin looks good on both sides of the court. People expecting this to be some kind of well oiled machine two games into pre-season are delusional.

KPJ is showing some defensive improvement. Tate and Seguin are going to be good defensively this year. Green is showing plenty of effort, but his lack of upper body strength is going to be a problem all year. He will score and facilitate better and better, but we will have to live with a glaring lack of defense all year. We really need to get rid of House and Gordan to make room for Christopher and Brooks to get more minutes. I suspect by the end of the 1st quarter of the season our offense will look much better. Defense will be better, but not enough to make us play-in contenders. I really hope Christopher makes the team and gets a 15 mins a game. He is already a better defensive player than House.

I’m not even going to try to evaluate the coaching at this point. This team at this point is just a team of random parts yet to be assembled. All these rookies trying to figure out how to play in the NBA at the same time. It’s going to take some time just to figure out how players should be used.

The Rockets are a team of young athletic players, but they lack shooters and they lack a strong floor leader. Over the next couple of years the roster should take shape and missing pieces will be added.

I don’t think KPJ has the PG position mastered yet. He needs to learn how to control the pace of the game & how to get his squad into flow consistently. He’s got to figure that out

Speaking just for myself, I had low expectations coming out of last season, lower expectations when we drafted 4 rookies in the 1st round, and that level has been maintained ever since. For me, it's not about wins and losses right now; it's about building chemistry but also get our young team prepared for the NBA game. Silas is making the former his top priority but how are you going to do that successfully if you're putting your young team in a blender by not trying to make the game simpler for them? There were a lot of times these guys didn't know when to cut, when to set picks, who to box out, etc. That's a sign of lack of preparation. Sure these guys won't see the Miami Heat team 82 games this season but the West is full of Heat-level teams. Maybe Silas will surprise me and actually have a few plays he'll call out against Toronto on Monday.

This is exactly correct, but I do think we will see significant improvement over the course of the year. KPJ is progressing nicely. He needs to be a bit more selfish and aggressive going to the rim. HIs one on one defense is improving. Tate and Seguin getting 30 mins a game will help our defense improve and our defensive rebounding, but with Green and the lack of a true rim protector we will continue to give up all kinds of layups and offensive rebounds. Wood is adjusting to how to play with KPJ and Green. He is way too passive right now so hopefully he will get a chip on his shoulder sooner rather than later. I have not been a proponent of trading him, but if he is not much more aggressive about a quarter of the way through the year, I would explore it.

Silas does need to put some structure on the offense pretty soon. This is the part of the season when we actually have practice time. Right now Green has to have the ball in his hands to be effective. When he and KPJ are in together one is pretty muted without the ball. Silas should really get some back picks going much like GSW to free up Green who would be unstoppable cutting to the basket. Seguin should get plenty of run controlling the offense from the top of the key. He will need to develop a dependable jump shot from that high post to make it even more potent.

I would really like to see a KPJ, Green, Tate, Sequin, Wood starting lineup and believe we would see a more acceptable defense from that crew. Second unit of Gordan, Christoper, Theis, and mixing in a little Brooks and Nwaba would be a pretty acceptable defensive unit as well. Garuba one on one defensive is good, but he is lost in the team defense. He will start in G-League, but that league seems more geared to improving offense than defense. I don’t think he will be a contributor this year.

The House experiment should be over. He will never be a consistent player. Brooks could be our sharp shooter specialist off the bench. We really don’t need Augustine or Exum, but one will probably continue to get significant minutes. It would be a mistake to keep Exum at the expense of loosing Brooks. He would be a good rotation piece if we were competing for anything, but not this year for us.

Agreed on all points. One of the simplest things to do is run a PnR. You got Wood and Theis out there...why not have KPJ run a PnR set every now and then rather than make him ad-lib? Why not use Theis to set baseline screens for Green so that he has some room to get open to create a shot? Like I don't even care if they miss their shots; at least they're running a structured offense.
