I think the obvious but far-too-simple explanation is racism. I don't find that very satisfying. Why would they care so much about the nuptials of a foreign monarch? Even if they do think he's a race traitor. They do understand that Prince Harry is a leech on someone else's taxpayers, right? Or is it that Markle is getting too uppity? She will be permanently leaving the country anyway. Yeah, so I really don't get it.
I'm not one to stand up for royalty much, but Prince Harry is an exception. That dude is a stand up guy...served his country in Afghanistan doing 2 tours and is heavily involved with the Invictus games. I like him.
I'm Franco-Texan, if you consider that a mix. My wife is black and Chinese. So my kids are half-white, quarter-black, and quarter-Chinese. It's a funny thing. My wife grew up identifying as mixed. One brother does too, while another calls himself black. They all look the same, have the same heritage and live in the same society, but interpret differently.
And there is the nuance. I don't know if you have talked to your Wife and her side of the family about this stuff, but I bet it will be an interesting conversation. Chinese and Black are two rich cultures, I'm assuming they had trouble with their identities growing up.
Um....it is really not that hard or important. Only people OBSESSED with who bi-racial identify with are people on the outside. Being a father of children who people never believe are half black, only it only comes up when it is more beneficial to choose "Black" for school classification (much better to be black when getting accepted to schools, scholarships and financial aid. No forces them to identify in their day to day reality, except assholes pushing their bigotry on one side or the other (im looking at your Twitter).
She's a strong-minded and strong-willed person, so I wouldn't characterize it as trouble. I could say more but upon reflection it's probably not wise to record too much history or psychoanalysis of my wife on the internet. Probably more relevant to her in this area than her culture or identity is the fact that at the end of the day she and her brothers and her children are non-white, and might find themselves treated as such by a police officer, a loan officer, an admissions officer, or any other officer who might be in a position of power he does not deserve to hold.
I used to actually not like Mariah Carey because I felt like she didn't claim her blackness enough in order to sell records. That was stupid but more importantly it's not my business. We as blacks are the ones holding on to the past. A lot of the biracial issue boils down to us feeling like you are trying to be better than the rest of us by claiming all of your heritage. Like, just wait till them white folks don't want you anymore type attitude. By holding on to the past we are holding on to the negativity. Our misery is our politics
How do we get the British Royals, Fox News execs, the Kardashians and the Trumps all on the same Malaysian Airlines flight?
