    This is silly.

My girlfriend's dad and stepmom are competitive chili and barbecue cooks. He placed at the international competition in Terlingua this year. He made his winning chili recipe at Christmas this year. There are no beans in his competition chili. My first bowl was straight chili and it was great.

His wife made her award winning pinto beans, which are judged alongside chili at almost every cookoff state-wide. My second bowl of red was mixed with her beans. I liked it way better with the beans. They didn't give me any grief over it.

I also like sugar in my cornbread. Shoot me.

Of course they didn't give you any grief. They must think you're a good catch for the chick! ;-)- As for sweet cornbread, it's very tasty, as long as there's some jalapeños in the mix. Beans shouldn't be in chili, though. There's a law somewhere in the 400+ amendments to the Texas constitution that says No BEANS!!!

pleasepleaseplease tell me he'll hand out souvenir cans of artichoke hearts after every gig... (You can have that idea in exchange for me and DT eating free once a week, preferably Fridays.)

Leave it to FFB to get belligerent and irate over chili at 3:21am the morning after Christmas and spawn an 8 page thread about it.

    I'm with Fatty, no beans.

I only read a few pages so not sure if what I'm about to say was said.

Ok, I'm from Indiana but have lived in Texas for about thirty years, so food wise, it's Texas all the way. Where I'm from the "chili" not only has beans, it has macaroni!!! I don't claim this in the slightest, just thought I'd share that bit of nonsense.

Thanks! I've always wanted to try a recipe like this that uses actual chiles instead of powder. It sounds awesome, I'll definitely give it a shot soon.

I think it makes a big difference. That being said, it's a lot less work to just powder it up. I still add powder sometimes too - my understanding is that "timing" the spice additions makes a big difference in taste - but I think you can avoid that problem sort of by foregoing the powder for actual peppers.

Edit: Sent it to you updawg. I noticed that the email form appears to screw with the spacing or something. Probably fall-out from the copy/paste from notepad. Sorry about that.
