Someone who recognized me from TV was telling me the same thing about using diet coke as a cleaning agent. Tempted to try it next time I have clean some really dirty pots.
On NPR a few days ago they had a food reviewer talking about Julia Child and comparing her to some of today's TV cooks. He pointed out that shows like "Top Chef" and "Iron Chef" are really more about the spectacle of cooking rather than teaching people to cook.

Don't eat ketchup. It can clean tarnished copper!!!! ;)

Most of the Coke acid rumors are myths. For one, the carbonic acid in it is weak. The added chemicals may end up frying you or a lab rat, though, so who knows about that stuff. :D I think mythbusters did something where they put a steak into a beaker of coke or something because they said it would dissolve the meat. I don't think it did - it was just nasty.

    rocketsjudoka,

I enjoyed watching that. You seem pretty cool. If the Rockets ever go to a summer league up there again, I'll be sure to say "hey" to you if I go. :D

You're one of the most down to earth folks on here, and I'll share recipes anytime with you anytime.

Seriously, you don't get repped enough. Good stuff. We'd have fun on a night out.

But the we still killed Cal... :p

Appreciate it Fatty and will plan on doing it next time I am down in Houston.
We took it out on ATM the following year.

Dr of Dunk that would be cool and if the Rockets are here for training camp let me know if you can get me in. I will give you some ribs if you can get me in.

So, I cooked up my variation tonight. I used Dr. Pepper instead of Coke, ground cayenne pepper, instead of serranos, and table salt instead of sea salt.

The ribs were good, but too salty. I should have used about half the amount of salt. I took my left over marinade and added worstershire and ketchup and cooked it down and it made a very tasty sauce.

I'll definitely try the recipe again with less salt.

I don't think nutrasweet's made for cooking. It's probably fine, but not sure how it reacts under high heat.

Look, I'm just going to toss it out there, but this tape could easily get you on a cooking show on food network's "next top star" or whatever.

I know you don't cook for a living, but this tape could get you on something.

A college sweetie does reality shows. I can swing it to her and see if she knows who to send it to.

Of course, that's if you would want to do something like that.

No kidding, Fatty, ain't Sishir one cool cat? I used to do a lot of grilling myself, more along the East Texas line, and while I can make some mean goodies on a charcoal grill (and do, just not as often), the thought of doing what he did on TV gives me the chills. Groovy in the abstract, nerve wracking in practice, at least for me. I can handle small audiences when it's a topic I'm well versed in and, preferably, passionate about (like the Rockets, history, geography, or Replicants), but the camera in my face would freak me out. So kudos to our resident martial arts/architect/disaster volunteer! I doubt if I'll be "allowed" to contribute towards another well-deserved green thingy, having hit the "spread it around, chump" deal the last time I tried, but I'll give it a shot.

The ribs sound terrific, and I'll try to cook some in a couple of weeks, but will use far less salt. I just don't cook with much salt, regardless of what I might be fixing. And Sishir, I loved watching you chow down while the talking heads were doing their thing. You're a man after my own heart, with your priorities straight! :)

I've used table salt before but sea salt is less salty and I find it better for grilling but I don't think it makes that much of a difference. You could also leave the dry rub on for less time before pouring the coke on so the salt doesn't soak into the ribs so much.

Wondering about the sauce you made since I baste the ribs while grilling them so any marinade left I usually just dump out. Since ketchup has sugar in it how sweet did the sauce end up?

Thanks Fatty. Not really planning on a career in TV but please go ahead and pass it on to your friend.

Meh. I'll swing it by her and see if she's looking for recruits...

    EDIT: Damn. It's all undefined.

I'll try to figure out how to send it.

I also basted the ribs while they were cooking, but I ended up with a good amount of marinade. The sauce is pretty sweet, but I like it that way.

Dude, who knows. I know if I had to, I could get somebody on a reality show, but I don't know if she does cooking. But I do know they all talk, so she knows someone.

I'll keep you posted. The fact that she's part asian has to help, right? :p
