What proof is there that a border wall will work?

The problem is that there is pretty serious disagreement as to what is "reasonable" and what isn't.

To some building a border wall while increasing surveillance of the border and making changes to chain migration policy is reasonable, to some it would represent some type of holocaust....because reasons?

To some banning all guns or all handguns would be reasonable, to some it represents an unacceptable violation of the constitution.

To some shooting a criminal armed with a stolen firearm is reasonable, to some it represents oppression that much be opposed with kneeling during the national anthem as a middle finger to the country.

The reason for most political disagreement is the differences in what is viewed as "reasonable"

Buck's graphic implies the number of illegal immigrants going down once a fence was constructed. The only open borders are along the river, which will be difficult to erect a wall. Seems like the current one is working. Not sure how much more improved they can make it.

    Bullshit yourself, comrade.

Gun control works in every other industrialized nation.

A border wall (and border security in general) is an enormous waste of time and resources, and so is the practice of tracking down, prosecuting, and deporting people.

It doesn't reduce crime. It doesn't create jobs. All it does is stroke the boners of xenophobes who want to blame everything wrong in their lives on someone else.

I think that's evidence supporting the idea that physical borders help, so why not build a wall that's harder to exploit than the current fence that is in place in parts of the border? If you do that and increase surveillance along that wall (and the areas where a physical wall is impractical) it would seem like you'd be left with a very manageable situation. If the inflow is manageable, that's when you start talking about amnesty and getting the illegals who are here on the books and out of the shadows. Kind of a win for everyone.

So your only argument is that you think it is a waste of money? Is that really a legitimate reason to prevent meaningful immigration reform then? If it doesn't harm anyone, why be so adamantly opposed to it?

There might be diminishing returns on improving the existing wall and there might be difficulties extending the wall due to physical barriers. It should come down to what's a better use (short term and long term) of our limited funds.

I'm sure there would be diminishing returns on a wall just like there is for just about everything, but again, it just doesn't seem like something that should be a deal breaker for meaningful immigration reform. If some people don't think it'll help, fine, some do and it doesn't really hurt anyone to try it....so why not? Also, it's not a scenario where it's one thing or the other, it wouldn't be a wall OR other methods of surveillance, you really can do both.....and IMO you SHOULD do both.

It would be hard for it not to, the question is to what degree, and compared to what other means on a cost/benefit basis (anathema to government, sadly).

The broader question is "How do you protect the border without a wall?"

It's done all the time to pacify groups, hell when Democrats took over congress during the end of the Bush years they went on a spending spree that saw the deficit go north of 1 trillion dollars a year and they weren't reigned in until they lost complete control of congress....since that's who would be making the argument, it kind of falls flat.

Given that neither party is fiscally responsible at all, it comes across as an excuse rather than a legitimate reason not to do it.

I mean, Democrats had no problems with including billions in what amounted to bribes to get fellow Democrats to support Obamacare, so why not do the same with Republicans in order to get a bill passed that might actually do some good?

The federal government throughout history increases spending when there is a reccession.

Obama entered office in one if the worst recessions in American history .

You going to be a wall along the Canadian border? There are more illegal crossings along that border. Oh that’s right, majority of those crossing that border have white skin.

If there becomes a problem of people illegally coming into the US then sure. As it stands, there isn't a widespread problem of people entering the US illegally through the Canadian border.

Right now there are more people illegally entering Canada FROM the US than the other way around.

Technology, b****es! For a fraction of the cost of this proposed stupidity you could have 24/7 drone surveillance *and* the border patrol agents on the ground to rapidly respond when/where needed.

    The wall is a boondoggle.

Not surprising that bobby is still beating the same drums and refusing to acknowledge anything that's pointed out to him. Yall carry on.

Just curious. Has anyone seen the current border wall fence down here in the RGV? I mean seen it more than once in their lives if that? I live 5 minutes north of the current border wall. My son's school has line of sight from the border wall.

Proof? This is not math class.

But I will say that there are many analogs throughout history and even today. Walls work in Israel and Korea
