I was in Galveston for a couple of days during the Gustav weekend. It's amazing to see the remnants of piers that you just saw 2 weeks ago.

Damn, those waves hitting the seawall are HUGE.

starting to gust up to the mid 30s here. guess Im starting to feel the outer bands.

no worries here. brick house+ boarded windows+ fully supplied+ high area of town= relatively safe 2K.

Ive got generator and UPS on every computer and on my router/modems the only way I get knocked offline is if Comcast's network goes down.

The people who are having to be plucked out of the Bolivar Peninsula area also made some wrong decisions and didn't have Galveston leadership to blame. Even though the Galveston Mayor had some missteps, people had gotten complacent since they had ridden out previous weather events in recent years and probably felt they could do it again with Ike.

If electricity gets knocked off in your neighborhood, the terminal box will be out, too. I bet. :)

There's no way to know for sure, but given what Alicia did to Houston I'd say it's a very strong bet that most of the city will lose power. Plan on it happening.

Stay safe, man. I have people in Channelview and Huffman which is right down the road from you. This looks like it is going to be a real rough one.

I was told that the power company was gonig to start shutting power off to avoid blown transformers and to avoid the dangers of down'd power lines. Whether power goes or not, I believe they will be shutting it down, at least along the severly affected areas.

pines typically snap at either the top or mid point during heavy winds, I have quiet a few pines around my home as well. It's the oak trees I am worried about once the ground gets saturated.
