Where this thing makes landfall is going to be a BIG deal for everyone. The worst winds are actually well to the northwest of the center, which means a hit to Galveston directly will put the worst winds in eastern Harris County and the worst storm surge into Trinity Bay and points east. Just 10-15 miles south and the worst winds get inside the loop (east of 45) and the worst storm surge right up into the ship channel, Galveston and Trinty Bay. Now, 10-15 miles east and all of us in Galveston/Houston miss the worst and places like Beaumont/Port Arthur get the brunt of the surge and winds.
We have a power generator, at least. My dad is going to the store to try and get some spare parts for it. I already took a long bath this morning, and, like I said, I think we're as prepared as we can be.
Not sure if this has been posted, but check out the "Strand Cam". Look at that water. http://www.galveston.com/webcams/
It won't matter because it will all be the same temp in about 1 hour. If you are lucky you may still have power (I hope you have both) and you can boil the water for drinking. But you can use the water to sponge bath and flush toilets even if you don't have power.
that's what I was planning on doing to get scores, hopefully I can find someone with a generator and dish if satellite is up and running Sunday. Keeping my fingers crossed.
i cant believe people are still whining about Rita. geeez. the storm was supposed to come here and luckily we missed it. that doesnt mean you ignore every freaking new storm..
ABC13 has been running pics of Galveston for a while. I-45 feeder roads are already flooding and beach houses are starting to see damage. And not a drop of rain has fallen yet.
Sorry I can't read every page of this thread but I just wanna know if anyone in Sugarland is staying put. I got family there but I'm stuck in Dallas and haven't had time to get any info. What's the forecast for the Sugarland/Ft.Bend County area? Will things get bad down there or not?
My family and I are staying put in Sugar Land. We're expecting rain and winds in the 65-70 mph range. Hopefully we'll be okay. Just had to bring small things inside and ride it out. I just don't want to deal with the power outages...I hope it isn't more than a couple of days. Stay safe everybody.
My family in the Houston area lives in Porter and League City. What are they saying about these areas, if anything? I don't want to call them if they are busy preparing or evacuating for the storm.
You guys be careful. I moved to Michigan two months ago, but all my family and friends are in Houston.
