Holy crap...reading there are homes in Surfside that ALREADY have water in them. This storm surge is going to be ridiculous.

Not TOO close--I live in the center of Pearland, but still... Pretty much just outside the mandatory evacuation zone.
Damnit, I was sound asleep, not a care in the world, and my mother in law calls and wants me and my brother in law to come out to her house. Why? Because she is afraid it is going to flood here at my house. I'm out past where the storm surge will reach, most likely. She's like 30 miles closer to Galveston. I'm not even THINKING about heading in that direction.
if you flood often...like with hard rains...i'd leave. the storm surge looks to be tremendously high. we're seeing flooding already in bayou vista and other coastal areas....and we're still about 17 hours away from landfall.
It's gotten dangerously high (about mid-driveway--only once in the early '90s), but never to my house. Our neighborhood is up relatively high compared to many other neighborhoods in the area, so I think we'll be okay.
sounds good...be safe. i know "sciguy" thinks inland flooding isn't likely...but all that water backed up has to go somewhere, and we're full of bayous here.
Thanks. I think we're as prepared as we can be. I don't know if you're in the Houston-area, but you be safe, too.
Just woke up, damn it felt good to get some sleep. Seems that I didn't miss much, other than the speed being at 105 now instead of 100. Is the path still about the same? Is it still expected to hit as a Cat 2 but with the storm surge typical of a Cat 4? I'm thinking of heading out soon and getting some pics. It feels weird outside for this time of year. There's a nice breeze.
speaking of sciguy...the chronicle isn't updating for crap. they should have multiple guys blogging about udpates if they really want to be that interactive. to feature this guy all over the paper and have him not give an update since 8 last night seems silly to me. the 3rd link down on their website is a link to the chat that happened AT 2 P.M. YESTERDAY! please. they'd do better linking here.
depends on who you ask about intensity. as always...they're not sure. but it's so close to being cat 3 now, i don't think it matters..this storm is, for all purposes, comparable to Alicia from 1983 but with a FAR bigger storm surge it would seem....and a track a little further to the east, since alicia went in at freeport. though i still wouldn't rule out a freeport landfall, frankly. listening to the chatter they keep talking about more bumps westward. but the models seeming to be focusing consistently now the eye passing directly over galveston island.
watching channel 2 right now???? the water is ALREADY UP TO THE SEAWALL AND CRASHING OVER. guys this is going to be bad for those right along the coast...really bad, it seems. we are literally at least 14-15 hours before landfall....and we're not even seeing feeder bands.
is that the estimate of how many people stayed there??? i'm guessing not. property damage is going to be gigantic in this storm.
