SE Harris County needs to be evacuated. School districts in Houston need to be cancelling Friday classes early tomorrow to give people the heads up.
for Rita I evac'd to beaumont to be with my family. I made a thread about it "Donny Does Rita". I won't be going to Beaumont this time though. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=102114&highlight=Donny+Rita
Max, Jeff or other weather afficianados...since this is so similar to Rita, what are the chances it moves to the Beaumont area and spares most of Houston? What's going on with the rest of the weather?
Dammit, I have a gig at the Moody Gardens Hotel on Friday night. While it hasn't "officially" been canceled, I expect it to. Dammit. Ike is going to cost me $350.
Jeff, do you have access to what the models had projected for Rita at this point? It seems that the NHC made this shift on their own because these latest models were not much different from this afternoons run. I guess that NW run has them discouting the 3-4 models pointing at the central Texas coast.
.... Yikes. I have loved ones in South East Houston. I am a bit worried about them. this couldnt go to some other place like Dallas or something. Maybe Utah?
According to the NHC update, right now, there is an equal chance of this storm hitting anywhere from Corpus to the Texas/Louisiana border. My guess is that, unfortunately, the most likely landfall is somewhere between Matagorda Bay and High Island, putting Houston right dead smack in the middle. But, I would not be surprised if things shifted tomorrow and we saw a track east of Houston similar to Rita. We didn't really know with Rita until Friday night, unfortunately, and I doubt we'll know with Ike either. I think too many people forget that a margin of a couple hundred miles is acceptable, if not preferable, when dealing with large scale global weather forecasting. The Texas coastline is only 300 miles. That's why it's so important to pay attention during hurricane season.
Go to the front page of the Chron. They have a link to one of SciGuy's blog posts about who should evacuate and who shouldn't. Being in Clear Lake, you'll probably need to evacuate if you are in one of the surge zip zones. If this reaches strong cat 3 status, you'll want to go regardless.
Thanks man. Another dumb question, but I really have no idea what to do and I have a buddy in Florida who's currently scaring the **** out of me. Should I worry about boarding up my windows out here in Katy?
Here's an animated forecast verification from Weather Underground. http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/at200517.asp?feature=verification The models were generally in better agreement with Rita throughout most of the forecast period, but they got pretty divergent towards the end.
or he could entice it with a lil sum'n sum'n. *cue pic of cryalinko pretending to hit it from the back*
Watching the news, they seem to be moving up the timetable for when we have landfall...they're talking about Friday night..around midnight, perhaps.
I'm dealing with that, too...i should have had boards fit and ready to go months ago. I'm really concerned given the trees I have around my home...but I don't think I have the time to get them boarded on my own. I don't know of any services that do it, either.
Here's a good overview: http://www.nlmoc.navy.mil/satellite/north_atlantic/hiresir/0809110015.jpg Animation: http://www.nlmoc.navy.mil/cgi-bin/movie.pl?satellite+jpg+10tttt+1200+1600+north_atlantic+hiresir You see that blob out there to the right? That's Josephine trying to get itself back together.
We're in a really new neighborhood and there aren't any trees around us except a couple small ones in my front yard. I guess it doesn't matter because I have no idea when I would do this.
