lol..bastards...during rita we either had to take 2 vacation days or not get paid at all. i thought since it was a mandatory evac we were supposed to get paid
If that latest track holds this is a disaster for Houston. Almost no one has evacuated and there is no longer any time to order a mandatory evacuation. That is basically the same track that Alicia took and that was a fairly small low end category cat 3. This is a huge storm and likely to be a strong cat 3. I remember Alicia and that wasn't fun at all.
No doubt even though the NHC said in its latest discussion that it thinks that we are starting to see the WNW movement that has been predicted. We'll see. If we continue to see NW movement for another 10-12 hours, I have no doubt we'll see another shift to the east tomorrow. This is really freakishly similar to Rita.
They are going to need to evacuate southern parts of Harris County if that's the track...there will be significant surge.
So, what do we think? Tomorrow when we wake up is the projected path going to continue to shift north like Rita, stay put or move back south a bit?
i dont know...i just dont have a good feeling about this. in the past i've never really prepared for a hurricane but for some reason im prepared for IKE...instinct maybe...hopefully your fathers right.
It's just too early to tell, but it sure is eerie. The way it is going, I wouldn't bet against a landfall east of Galveston.
Interestingly enough, Rita was actually FURTHER south and closer to land than Ike and it still made it all the way to Louisiana. Weather patterns are obviously different, but that is some coincidence.
I was hoping by tonight we'd be able to say with some fingers-crossed certainty that we would bet against a landfall just west of Galveston. Apparently we can't.
I went to an Exxon on Wilcrest and I-10 that was out of regular unleaded. there were lines at every gas station I passed. Surprisingly, there was still bread and water on the shelves at the store at about 9:30. But my guess is it will all be gone in the morning.
Wow, they almost look the same. Except Ike isn't not a cat 5 and we aren't evacuating. Hopefully Ike will do the same as Rita.
Just got back from Wal-Mart on the Seawall in Galveston. The place is starting to get cleared out of all necessities...and being Wal-mart, this includes chips, soda and beer. The guy behind me in line reeked of alcohol and had ten box-o-wines. Everything is being boarded up on the Seawall. It's pretty empty except for some of the bars, which are packed. I guess everyone is off work tomorrow. Most of the gas stations I saw had bags over the pumps. At around 54th, where the Seawall bends in front the San Luis Hotel, there was a cluster of media vans, a big spotlight and a crowd of people. Lo and behold, there is a guy who looks like Jim Cantore. My wife calls me a few minutes later and says he is on the island. He's usually a bullseye for hurricanes. I have a hotel reserved on 45 near Beltway 8 north- hopefully that is far enough. Galveston ISD is off tomorrow, but for some reason UTMB is stubbornly sticking to it's guns to work tomorrow. I'm going to get my work done and head out as soon as I can in the morning.
