Whats the rule for being reimbursed by FEMA? Coastal areas declared emergency Area: President declares hurricane emergency for Texas President Bush this morning has declared a hurricane emergency for Texas due to the approach of Ike. Here's the White House statement: STATEMENT BY PRESS SECRETARY DANA PERINO The President today declared an emergency exists in the State of Texas and ordered Federal aid to supplement State and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from Hurricane Ike beginning on September 7, 2008, and continuing. Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide, at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent Federal funding. R. David Paulison, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Sandy Coachman as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected area.
How mean can people be? Tying your dog up during a hurricane???? Imagine the dog whipping around the tree! This made me laugh.
Guys, just curious....with a worse case scenario, how long do the maximum sustained winds last? I am going to stay put in West Houston, but if it's a Cat 4 direct hit, I'm expecting 100 MPH winds where I am....but is this for an hour or multiple hours? I guess it's impossible to predict.
btw, do hurricanes tend to uproot smaller trees or larger trees? I live in Montgomery County, surrounded by about 20 50-70 foot oaks/pines/sweetgums, some of which are less than 20 feet from my house.
Seriously, these live chats have been the best thing about this year's hurricane season. I don't know how Berger keeps from slitting his wrists while doing those things.
that's my issue too...i have huge pines right across the street that scare me. i have a big old oak in my front yard that has shown some signs of ill health. i'm not thrilled about those. i think oaks hold up well. pines do not at all
Be VERY concerned about pine trees. Pine trees do not have deep roots (they can uproot), they do not bend well (they can snap). Pine trees are especially vulnerable if isolated. Forests of pines can take the wind better since they support each other as they sway. My mother in law lost 27 trees in Katrina. Almost all were pine trees. Big ones too. My father in law had three trees hit his two houses. All pines. I have pics from post katrina, and damn near every tree down is a pine.
we picked up the last packages of water from the krogers in TC... I'm pretty much ready to go...gonna fill up the gas in the car...
What about the Bellaire/Meyerland area? I haven't heard anything on that yet. However, I have a lot of stuff I need to move if I'm in a dangerous area. Thanks in advance
Ill do you one better. Check out this dead tree I have in my front yard: I also have this 90 year old 75 ft. sweetgum that is not looking too good. Look at the size of the trunk (this is only 15 feet from my garage).
Yeah I figured it to be a possiblity. Chimney Rock and that area tends to always flood. I'm more in the Bellaire area but I'm still going to be prepared. Appreciate the heads up though
Yikes. Trees are why I left for Rita. Trees mixed with the fact we had a 10 month old baby at home, too. The idea of sticking around for no power with a 5 year old and a 10 month old was just unbearable...and I didn't trust the trees.
