Nothing wrong with talking evacuation as long as they state what the evacuation areas are. This is where Bill White totally dropped the ball with Rita. This map should be flashed on local TV on a regular basis and Mr. White needs to refer to it. Everyone in the Houston gulf coast area should be aware of where they live in relation to these evacuation zones. The people that really need to evacuate should NOT be hostage to hysteria and ignorance, and elected officials and TV meteorologists should do everything they can to keep people calm and logical. Click on this link for a better map and more detail, including zip code listings. http://www.houstontx.gov/oem/images/2008evacmap.pdf People with very young children and other exceptional circumstances should use their judgment. The rest of us should keep our heads on straight and not panic.
FWIW, I just saw the 18z HWRF and it has shifted back to the south near Corpus as well with its northerly turn after landfall.
Thanks for your insight, Jeff. You're the calm of the storm. Because of you and the infamous Rita thread I totally got hooked on WU and have learned quite a bit by reading tutorials the members post, the blogs, steering currents, highs, lows, troughs, etc. It's become my new addiction.
BTW- This is something I still do not understand. What does 6, 18z, 00z mean? Are these time tables for model runs? I've looked all over WU blogs and other sites and I still haven't gotten a handle on what exactly it all means. Thanks again.
the GFDL and and HWRF look to be making landfall around matagorda bay as of now. thats within 100 miles of us. its gonna be rough.
I don't like the feel of this one, too many radical shifts in forecast. We have gone from the Florida Keys to Northern Mexico in less than a week. Doesn't give you much confidence that they are right now. This is starting to remind of me of Rita and that is not good. If it grows into a 4 or 5 and then shifts North just before landfall, we will have huge mess on our hands. That will not be enough time to respond appropriately. The models keep moving up and down the coast; they were further South earlier today. My choice is the King's Ranch, nothing is there.
I'm pretty nervous myself. Galveston officials are supposed to be making a decision tomorrow. My pops works at Shriners in galveston and is on hurricane duty...so we would be the last ones to be able to evacuate if orders are given. Not only that, I'm supposed to start a new job in downtown houston on Monday, not sure if this will affect it or not...
I figured out why we are getting a bunch of hurricanes in the gulf. It's a government conspiracy. Remember in 2005, they said the Japanese were getting revenge on us via Hurricanes via the KGB? http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Idaho_meterologist_promotes_Hurricane_Katrina_conspiracy_theory http://www.philvalentine.com/TheJapaneseRussianHurricaneConspiracy.htm http://www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/2005-09-20-wacky-weatherman_x.htm They're trying to drive up the price of gas. I just filled up my 2012 Toyota Tacoma ten door. I was 3.35. I drive home today and see the same gas station, and it now says 3.45. I can't wait to see it tomorrow morning. Damn you Bush, McCain, Gore, and Obama.
Just slightly. All the models are now in really good agreement with the UKMET and HWRF just slightly north of the NHC (just south of Freeport) and the rest squarely on Corpus. The NHC seems to be splitting the difference between the two. The good news is that the late run has incorporated data from the hurricane hunters and is still looking at landfall in just over three days. If they stay the course through noon tomorrow, we'll have a very clear picture of where Ike is going.
you damn right i am. turn that smiley upside down. I've been eating my hurricane food, so i have to buy more crap now.
Looks pretty solid that it's going to be a nasty weekend in Austin regardless of where it exactly makes landfall.
