I think I mentioned yesterday that it would be Wednesday afternoon before we could be really certain of where Ike will go. That's still the case. Unfortunately, the margin for error at 4 days is still just too big. Tomorrow, we're looking at under 3 days before landfall. It will also help that the storm will be off Cuba and the models will incorporate data from the hurricane hunters.
I dunno. Katrina changed everything, and so did Rita for the Houston area. There was a LOT of political mud-slinging for the devastation in New Orleans, and in Houston, there was a lot of political mud-slinging because of our poor evacuation policy. I think that today's politicians are more likely to tell people to evacuate for storms even when it may not be necessary because they'd rather play it safe than sorry. They don't want to be the mayor who didn't evacuate the city for the big hurricane. We play the blame game nowadays.
you know we evacuated during alicia, right? back in 1983 before we'd ever heard of mike brown or bill white.
Yeah, but it didn't have the same feel as it does now. It didn't seem like there was a political blame game going around. Either that or I was just a naive 14-year-old who was completely unaware of the politics.... or maybe both?
Tennessee won’t take in Ike evacuees By CLAY CAREY Staff Writer The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency will not provide shelter to Gulf Coast residents who are evacuating in the shadow of Hurricane Ike, the agency said. In a brief statement, TEMA said it is “temporarily unavailable” to organize large shelter operations as it recovers from efforts to house evacuees who left because of Hurricane Gustav. More than 6,300 New Orleans residents fled to Tennessee before that storm, TEMA said. They were housed in more than 33 shelters around the state. TEMA said those shelters would have to be cleaned and supplied before a new wave of evacuees could be taken in, and that the people who ran the shelters needed an opportunity to rest. http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080909/NEWS/80909031
So what Tenn. is really saying is "We didn't like the crime jumps we got during the last storm thanks to refugees so this time you can keep them."
Tennessee sucks. That said, I think anyone from East Texas that has to evacuate should head to New Orleans. How bout returning the favor?
that would be awesome....except our evacuess would get embarrassed by the NOLA natives. lol and to evacuate there only to possibly get hit with another hurricane within a month? that would suck.
Actually, the city did NOT call for mandatory evacuations of many of the areas evacuated during Rita. People did it on their own. Our problem wasn't politicians saying to leave. In fact, I remember Bill White going on TV and radio and basically imploring people to stay at home unless they were in an evacuation zone. He said that people in the city center would be safe if they lived in a well-built home and to just stay put. The problem, politically, is that we had no plan for the traffic or the lack of fuel. Since Rita, the state has put a much better evacuation procedure in place including providing re-fueling stops along the evacuation routes. Our problem with Rita was a combination of poor planning and panic on the part of people who had no business leaving.
The lastest projection has it about 25-50 miles away from me. I would rather have it showing going my way this far away then 1 day away. That thing could go either way.
Billingsly said it will go through enough warm water to be a Cat 3. Likely hit Texas coast midnight Friday.
The latest model is too close for comfort...if this model holds up, we're gonna see some crazy weather starting friday night.
I'm not sure about sustained winds of TS force in Houston as they're predicting a 170 mile wind field for TS winds. If it indeed does hit where the NHC is predicting, we'll get rain, some gusts and I wouldn't be surprised to see some tornadic activity here either. I wish it would run into some force field and just go **poof** to spare anybody this storm.
Is he agreeing with the landfall from the NHC? He's about the only weather guy in Houston I trust. He doesn't seem to over hype it like 11 and 13.
Yeah they want the ratings. On 13 they are acting like they wopnt know until a day before the freakin' storm where it will hit, instead of being ralistic and giving us a percentages. what a joke.
