Nah, Maggette has durability issues while Iggy has missed six games in four seasons. Plus, they had his Bird Rights anyway.
Why are people bashing the Grizzlies for offering a contract? Smith signed it knowing full well that Atl could match.
what a rip off, this is why 76ers will continue to lose. Why in the hell will an organization spend its star type of $ for someone good not great. They remind me of the clippers.
How did they overpay for him? The guy is a 24 year old that's already a stud SF and he's going to be a perennial all-star for years to come and the Sixers finally have all the pieces to make some noise in the playoffs. They locked him up until he's 30. People like Tmac, Pierce, Shawn Marion etc are all past their prime and won't last forever. In 2-3 years the top small forwards in the game are going to be ........ 1) Lebron James d i s t a n t 2) Andre Iguodala 3) Josh Smith
Very good point I for how old he was they are locking him up for a good chunk of his prime years, and making that much a year he will think twice about opting out making that much a year.
B. Roy can play the sf, and IMO, well you cant say lebron b.c he already is but B. Roy is the future that guy will be so damn good an all star his 2nd NBA season
They overpaid without a doubt. I don't think Iguodala has the mentality to be a top-flight NBA player.
reportedly he was ready to take the qualifying offer, which would have left many bidders next season. personally, i am of the camp that the sixers didn't overpay for him. $11 million appears to be the market value for wingmen who average 20 points as kevin martin and monta ellis - but iguodala has displayed an aptitude for defense unlike these players, which earns him more money. plus he was the leader on a team which defied expectations - whereas the other restricted free agents of this summer were not the leaders of their own team. for example, some argue that ellis will not improve significantly with davis's departure because davis created opportunities for him. i am not arguing that iguodala should be considered as anything more than a second fiddle, but unlike some others, i think his improvement is guaranteed considering that his game is not dependent on the opportunities created by another star. and i don't understand how some believe that with brand on the team, his scoring will decrease. granted, brand will have to take a share of shots from the team, but his presence in the low-post will also create opportunities on the wing.
Josh Smith is one of the best young power forwards in the league. He is the size of David West, Scola, Jamison. What minutes he got out of the 4 spot last year was at C, not SF. I suspect as he gets stronger if anything that trend will go that way, there is nothing wrong with being a super athletic 4, more of a match-up problem there than an overside swingman with average perimeter skills. Iggy is a pure swingman. As is Roy. BTW the are the same age (24). People forget Roy was old coming into the league for a rookie--he is older than Lebron even (hard to believe but true). Rudy Gay deserves mention as a possible future stud swingman, remember he is 3 years their junior than Iggy/Roy, a pup at 21, with pretty much the same stat line (though admitted his teams bottom line was a lot different). Of course I'd probably put the ceiling of Durant and Beasley over any of these guys save Lebron--Beasley may be more of a PF though. Maggette is soon to be 29 and certainly won't be getting any better--you are signing him for what he is, no P factor on top.
WTF does B.Roy have to with this conversation? B.Roy is one of my favorite players but he is no SF by any means. Sure he can play spot up minutes at SF but he's a classic 2 guard that sees more time at the 1 even than 3. Besides, Roy is going to get paid at least 80 million if not more than that when it's time for a new contract but once again that's a moot point because he's NOT a small forward. Carmelo is already a max contract player at 5 years 80 million. Iguodala signed for 6 years 80mil. You do the math both are nice players at age 24 and both are going to be one of the top SF's in the game in the next few years the only reason why I didn't list Carmelo is because he's already a max player. With all that said I'd build a team around Iguodala before Melo. Seriously, Iguodala got a good deal and Sixers paid market price for him.
hehe well maybe all this discussion is premature: http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/53978/20080813/gm_on_iguodala_on_deal_yet/ According to Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports that forward Andre Iguodala has signed a 6 year, $80 million extension are premature. Jasner received an email response from Sixers GM Ed Stefanski saying that there was "nothing to report from our side." Later, in Los Angeles on vacation, he was interviewed by Tom McCarthy, of the Phillies' broadcast team, during the Phils-Dodgers game. When asked about Iguodala, he said, "Right now we're still negotiating. I hope it comes to fruition, but there's no deal yet.'' Comcast SportsNet is saying that while a deal has been agreed to in principle, it has not yet been finalized and would not be so as of last night. According to the Daily News, there has been speculation that agent Rob Pelinka initially asked for a maximum contract, and the two sides have been negotiating from there.
I agree. IMO Iggy wasn't even the best Andre on his own team. I think plays good D but he can't shoot and his scoring just comes from being athletic and playing in a fast paced system. I think JVG once said that he is best suited being like the 4th best guy on a good team. Right now i feel like he's a poor man's Stephen Jackson.
