Exactly. On mine, I'd have Airplane, The Big Lebowski, Caddyshack, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, and Some Like It Hot above Ghostbusters, and that's just going by this list and leaving out films I thought were funnier, but may be too "high brow" for some folks, like Play It Again, Sam, which didn't even make the list. And I love Ghostbusters.

I'm with you. I wasn't posting it with the idea that it was the definitive comedy list. I thought it was pretty good, but one can always find disagreements with such lists.

I'd love to hear other movies from people that weren't included but were really funny and worth checking out. I tend to not rent comedies very often, so I'm sure there are many that I missed over the years.

Other movies that deserved to be on there but weren't:

    A Night at the Opera

    Animal Crackers

    Horse Feathers

    Monkey Business

    The Coconuts

    The Miracle of Morgan's Creek

    City Lights

    Limelight

    It's a Gift

    The Bank Dick

Of those selections take one of the ones from the Marx Brothers, one from WC FIELDS, and one from Chaplin, include The Miracle of Morgan's Creek and that would be 4 that should have been on the list.

I might argue to replace Rushmore with Bottle Rocket

Agreed, it's just a list. It's going to be hard to get people to agree on their favorites comedies.

That said, it is a good list. You could argue about the ranking of the 20 movies, but that is a good 20, very funny. Also, Princess Bride is definitely a comedy and definitely hilarious; very quotable too.

    Wow.

I'm ok with Lebowski. People obviously liked it more than I did. But Some like it Hot? I'm a HUGE fan of Lemmon, but that movie just barely made me chuckle, and even then it was only sparingly. I watched it once. If it was on again and I flipped to it accidently, I would still move on. Just a mediocre movie.

Honestly, I think Lemmon's best comedic work was in the Grumpy Old Men franchise, which I would put in my top ten. I can watch both of those as much as Christmas Story.

Fatty, I really don't know what to say, except that people obviously have different tastes. Grumpy Old Men couldn't begin to compare to Some Like It Hot, in my opinion, but maybe it's a generational thing. I refuse to debate The Big Lebowski.

Generational? Perhaps. But give me one laugh out line from that movie, other than the "nobody's perfect" line at the end, which came off as stale to me.

In terms of their influence on the genre over the last 30/40 years, this seems like a fair enough list. Ghostbusters probably laid the groundwork for half the alien/superhero blockbusters ever made.

Scary Movie is probably a good case study on copyright law, but I'd put Clue in it's place, and Meatballs/Porky's/Revenge of the Nerds over American Pie.

I'll put AIRPLANE! over Ghostbusters. I'd put a lot of comedies above that one. It would probably be in my my top 25, but not my top ten.

But then again, I still think UHF rivals AIRPLANE! in successful skits.

    Pink Panther is missing.

One movie that made me lol and was quotable was Meet The Parents. sueqels, meh.

Ghostbusters as #1 is itself a comedy.

wow. I didn't like most of these movies. I do like comedies, but I like the movies like Snatch and The whole nine Yards. I did love Shawn of the Dead.

I haven't seen Annie Hall or Rushmore. Of the ones I've seen, I liked all of them except Dr. Strangelove. So I guess this list is better than most comparable lists just because there's not a lot of garbage in it.
