    Yeah, that's way too cold....

Outside of Florida, where would you put down roots?

    I would consider

    Barcelona
    The Balearics
    Lisbon
    San Diego/La Jolla
Possibly the nicer parts of LA
    Maybe Bangkok or Singapore

If I knew it would only be for a year or two max, perhaps even Dubai

If it had to be Germany, then only Munich

Edit: I might possibly consider London again at some point in the future, but only if I could spend tons of time in Ibiza or wherever.

But with kids, it's much less about what I like and much more about what the best circumstances for them are.

My wife finds Boca boring and feels a bit isolated there, and I get it. She also travels a lot less than I do.

But she agrees with me that it's near perfect for our kids and our life situation right now.

    WTF are the Balearics?

La Jolla is amazing to visit as is SD, as are the nicer parts of LA.

Tell me about Portugal...I'm very interested.

I was in Coronado a couple of weeks ago. Was in Venice Beach yesterday (cold!!) and walked around West Hollywood and Wilshire a bit today. Quite nice.

Lisbon has amazing history, culture, music, climate, great IT talent and beautiful buildings, as well as great beaches nearby. Cost of living is relatively affordable. Going to a gay wedding there in September.

The latest national numbers on gender equality are out with Iceland, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden being the Top Five. I'm guessing there is some relationship to the Happiness Index in there somewhere.

Of course. We want women to want to be taken, not forced to do so…

Update: By luck, Spain happened to change their laws on citizenship by descent in 2022 allowing for grandchildren to apply for citizenship without needing to step foot in the country.

My wife ended up completing her degree on time, shortly after she landed a well paying 100% remote-work job, and just today I got my Spanish citizenship approved. It's taken longer than what I wanted, but it's finally coming together for us, I'm excited but still expecting god to throw a pie in my face and then reject me at the rim.

For those who investigate this subject on youtube, some videos have cost breakouts for the various living expenses.

The Thailand cost breakouts have an interesting line item ... bar girls.

I have fantasies about such a move, but the Mrs and I have too many family complications, elderly relatives, etc. I'd really have to just cut all of them off, and right now, it looks like all these folks in my parents generation are set to outlive me, which is saying something already.
