South Korea is a pretty nice place to live. I spent a year there.

Wildland fire is a global issue. If you checked out the wildland fire thread, you know about Russia and their problems in recent years. Right now, there are quite a few fires in the western Sierra Madres of Mexico. Portugal, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, and other Med countries have been seeing an uptick in frequency, intensity, and duration to the point that they are getting overwhelmed on a regular basis. Ukraine and points east in central Asia have active fire years. Northern European countries are also seeing fire when and where they traditionally have not. The band of the UK that includes the Lake District is seeing more and larger fires than they have the expertise to manage. That's just a quick tour of the Northern hemisphere. Down south, there's Australia and New Zealand, Indonesia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Brazil, etc. There's a screaming need for more wildland fire expertise across the world as we see more and more places coming online. Even Greenland has had some fire in the last couple of years.

We're at the point where countries are starting to realize they can't handle an extreme period by themselves. This goes for the US too. A number of us are exploring some proposals for greater international standardization (terms, radio ops, orgs, strategies/tactics, logistics, etc.) and resource availability. I'm thinking about heading over to the EU this fall to go to a couple of conferences that might help push this along.

So, yeah. It's a worldwide problem and like here in the US and Canada, we expect it to get worse as we continue to heat up. Countless studies back that up. Here are some takeaways from one:

    And another:

    Here's an article:

If it were me looking long-term at Europe, I would stay away from southern Portugal and most of Spain, Southern France, Italy, Greece, and the Med islands. Not just because of potential fires, but heat and drinking water availability too.

Maybe Galicia and Asturias in Spain or Brittany and the Cotentin Peninsula in France would be OK long-term. At first glance, you'd think places like Norway and Sweden would be good, but they are heavily forested and I expect them to come online with fires in a big way shortly. Same for the Baltics.

Regardless of where you want to go, look at future temps, future drinking water, and future fires. You also want to pick a place that has a stable and educated society because the changing conditions will create major stresses and you want your place to be agile enough and smart enough to adapt. (That may be another argument for becoming an expat.)

    World Happiness Report 2023
It has been over ten years since the first World Happiness Report was published. And it is exactly ten years since the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/281, proclaiming 20 March to be observed annually as International Day of Happiness. Since then, more and more people have come to believe that our success as countries should be judged by the happiness of our people. There is also a growing consensus about how happiness should be measured. This consensus means that national happiness can now become an operational objective for governments

Finland seems like a great place to land.

    Pros:
    • #1 on World Happiness Report rankings six years straight
    • First world country with a solid economy
    • Cost of living is 10% lower than the US
    • Finns are badass
    Cons:
    • Language barrier
    • Right next to Russia
    • 75% of the country is covered in woods. According to @rimrocker that's bad for future fire outlook.
    • IT'S ****ING COLD

I feel like I probably already answered in this thread in the last 3 years...... But I'd move back to Switzerland. It's my favorite country that I've lived in. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful, and so easy to hop on a train and be in the Italian side, French, German, etc....and Europe is so small it's so easy to experience many other countries.

I don't believe this bullshit about Finland -- dark and extremely cold 11 months a year and the people are weirdos.

Europe, the US and Canada, and Aus/NZ are the best places to live? Who would have guessed.

Happiest doesn't necessarily mean best place to live. "Ignorance is bliss" is a cliché for a reason.
