    me too

when a person takes a "my soul doesn't stink" approach because of his religion, it always offends, whether the proselytizer is Christian, Muslim, or something else.

why don't you ignorant bastids listen to me, then you can be God's bestest buddy, too!

    is how it sounds.

Born atheist and stayed that way until 35.
Prior to 35, I search and read everything I could find because I wanted to believe.
Nothing appealed to me. Any religion that even hinted, "it's me or nothing" got shelved quickly (there's just too many people around for that statement to work)
In the end I found that my ideas worked just fine. So it wasn't printed somewhere...
Actually it has been printed...pieces of it can be found in every book, and in every experience.

It offends me, too, FF. particularly as a Christian...Christianity's essence starts with the acceptance that all our souls stink. that we're in need of a savior because of it. agreed that the self-righteous pollute that concept...the same way the pharisees did in Jesus' time.

that's a breath of fresh air

Jesus loved yanking the chain of Pharisees, didn't he?

Those are my favorite lessons. Every time they tried to trap him, he had a story or a riddle to gain the advantage. I think Jesus wanted us to accept a way of life, and that way is how we live every day, not the dogma that religion tends to become.

It's my mistake. I accept it. I took the wrong approach, and it rubbed off the wrong way. I apologize.

I do, however, want to say that I can't sit here and listen to Christians saying that atheists are OK. Why? Because atheists are basically saying you're living a fabricated life, and that "your" God doesn't exist. I'm not saying atheists are bad people, but if it's ok for them to say there is absolutely no God, but it's NOT ok for me to say that we (Christians, Jews, Muslims) have faith in the same God, then justice isn't being done.

    Master Baiter,

I believe in Islam, you believe in Christianity. Congratulations to you. It's not my job to question whether or not Christianity is from Allah or not, it's just my duty to believe it. Can you fault me for that?

Let's assume that I don't agree with what happened to the WTC. Some people say they are right, some say ther are wrong. It's called debate. Let's assume that I believe they won't, but people here WILL debate that opinion. Is that difficult to understand?

"I dont for a second believe that women in Arab countries are treated properly and you telling me that they are will not make me think otherwise. "

    Make any sense?

Again, I apologize for offending anyone here. My intention was for you to convince me that I'm wrong, not for me to convince you that you're wrong. I wanted to see what you see. Too bad.

agreed...particularly when that dogma becomes divisive within Christianity. that really bothers me. having said that, I am not real impressed with churches which are so afraid not to offend people that they lose their meaning. a church shouldn't set out to offend people...but it should also never shy away from what it believes to be true.

Jesus talked a lot about eternity...he talked about eternal consequences for our sin a whole heck of a lot...i think he was talking about more than just how we live every day...having said that, he also said the kingdom of God is here and now! eternity has already begun.

yeah...my favorite is when they corner him with the money with Caesar's face printed on it asking him about taxes...putting him in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation before both religious leaders and roman authorities. his response was amazing. would love to have seen that in person.

    Sane,
How can you say there's a debate about whether the murder of 3,000 people was right or wrong? There is no debate, in any modern widely practiced religion.

After studying religion on my own for many years I have come to the conclusion that it is all about controlling the masses.

Religion itself is inherently bad in that it asks people to believe in spiritual leaders who have the same fundemental problems as the rest of us, mainly they are humans.

I can not see how any eductated person can actually believe that any ONE religion has it right.

Religion has always been about power, and influencing people to one's own way of thinking.

I am sure that when we die, we will all discover that we all have it completely wrong.

The only redeeming thing about religion IMHO, is that it teaches right from wrong, and this is something that is inherent in almost all of us anyway.

    Religion is a joke.

I am an atheist. Its ok to be an atheist. Its ok to be a Christian. Its ok to be a Muslim, or Buddist. But it is not OK to say its not OK to be an atheist. If it is not OK to be an atheist, then its not OK for someone else to be something else other than belonging to your own religion. It will then be not so OK for this world. Thats how many wars, directly or indirectly have started. I dont care what God you believe in. It could might as well be YAO MING. Just as long as you are peaceful people, abide by the laws in a civil society, love your neighbors, be generous and forgiving to others. Then its OK. OK?

no...it's not entirely ok. now i'm certainly not about amassing government power to force you to accept my belief system. but if i truly believe what i believe....and i don't attempt to share that with you in a loving way...then i'm an utter jackass.

Agreed with MM, with the caveat that it is SHARED with atheists and other religions and not forced down their throat.

Isnt that the whole idea. You can preach whatever you want, as one is entitled to do so in a free society. Of course there are always some exceptions. One cant "preach" fire in a crowded theater. So its OK to be an atheist, as long as you dont force that "idea" down someone else's throat.

isn't what the whole idea?? not sure i understood.

it's ok to be an atheist from certain perspectives...from others, it's not so ok...but that doesn't mean that if i think it's "not so ok" that i can try to force some change...or have the government force some change.

Religion is all a matter of opinion.

    And, none of ours matter.
