Yeah, sorry my post seemed like it was confrontational. I wasn't trying to say you're wrong or anything. My original post was more lamenting how this team did not have Morey during our rebuilding process following Dream/Drexler/Clyde/Quitter era.

My guess is that we would be up a gum tree! Possibly one of Morey's pupils could take over!! :p

Buford was given a contender by Popavich after he dropped his GM title and became only the coach. Kupchak only looks good because former Lakers keep making trades to him to help him out and also players fall for the nostalgic on the franchise name. Otis is a good GM because the idiot before him was terrible drafting a guy in the lottery who never planned on coming to the NBA to play (see Fran Vázquez 2005 NBA draft). Prichard was a Morey type he con people into one sided trades and Portland will regret firing him. Presti has made some good moves so far but lets wait and make sure its not luck give him a couple more years.

no clear upgrade to hiring morey.

but i would assume that the rockets are documenting EVERYTHING they do (processes, procedures, etc, the hardwork if you will) during morey's tenure.

this will help if an eventual replacement is brought in.

if it were me, i would hire a guy who was open to moneyball... or heavy statisitical analysis. so far the recipe is working.

I am trying to figure out what makes Otis Smith so great. The Magic's two best guys are Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson (a distant second). Both were drafted in 2004 by the vilified "Hockey Guy GM." Hedo Turkoglu, perhaps the 2nd most important guy next to Howard during their run to the finals, was also acquired in 2004.

Otis Smith became Co-GM (with Dave Twardzik) of the Magic during the 2005-2006 season.

Since that time, their most notable player move (certainly the most expensive) was getting Rashard Lewis at $120 million, and then the Vince Carter swap. Otherwise, it's trading a 1st rounder for Rafer Alston, signing a Pietrus there, a Matt Barnes here...

Frankly, Hockey Guy GM's acquisitions are still more important to the team.

If anything, the one thing Smith did to really get the team to be good was hire Stan Van Gundy to replace the Johnny Davises and Brian Hills of the world. Which is pretty important and he deserves credit for it.

Great architect of the Lakers championships in the 80s and the Kobe/Shaq years. Though with the latter one it helped that Shaq and Kobe both had boners about the Lakers legacy. Shaq decided to go as FA, Kobe threatened to play in Italy. It would help if the Rockets also had that kind of fortune (well, we did, but unfortunately our good fortune consisted of Steve Francis forcing his way out of Canada and Stromile Swift giving a hometown discount and signing for MLE :) ).

And his Memphis tenture? Not so glorious. Yes, they got better under him, but like Smith's Magic, the most important guys on that team-- Gasol and Battier (a distant 2nd) were there before West became GM. Just so happened their development as pros came during West's tenture. West's draft picks were mostly the Troy Bells of the world.

Hired a couple of decent coaches, Hubie and Czar. Got some decent role players-- Bonzi, Posey, etc. Signed Brian Cardinal to the MLE.

    Nothing to write home about.

Got Rudy Gay for Battier... no doubt some here have boners for Gay. But what's that been good for? Three 20-win seasons and a 40 win season before Gay likely leaving for FA?

    ELITE
    morey, pritchard, presti, buford

    GOOD
colangelo, kupchak, petrie, paxon, ainge, nelson (dallas)

    AVERAGE
    dumars, bird, Pfund, hammond

    everyone else is pretty unreliable.

*i'd like to also mention that some presidents of basketball operations are pretty reliable GM's. walsh, riley, and thorn come to mind.

Tell me what Pritchard has done again? He wasn't even GM when Roy and Aldridge were drafted.

Pritchard. Look at the job he's done with Portland. They'll be solid for years. It's unfortunate they let him go.
