I'd let him play, but other than the 2012 Olympics, he wouldn't be able to play in any more CBA games.

Let him play, not least because that was the agreement when we drafted him.

Houston pays him but I'm sure all you all have friends or coworkers who have been shuttling to Iraq to fulfill their obligations for the national guard... despite the fact that they're PAID by whatever local businesses. And yeah it puts a strain on both the soldier and the business but country comes first

Coke pays Yao too... does that mean they get to pull Yao from arenas that serve Pepsi or have a big pepsi sign out front. Yao is not Jordan, he's not going to sit out the Olympics or refuse to wear Nike apparel on the stand because someone paid him to.

Paying a dude doesn't mean you own the dude. Sure if you really really have a problem with it you can dock his pay or sue him if you want to take it there, but seeing how Houston already has an agreement in place about Yao's role with the chinese team that's not going to happen.

Now, should Yao play? Dont know dont care. From what I understand China sucks and it should only be a few games either way. What needs to happen though instead of us not wanting Yao to play is Yao HIMSELF needs to realize that aint helping his legacy. He himself needs to want to not waste his time with this crap and to start doing EVERYTHING to try to keep his body in condition to weather the NBA season

No, because you didn't give a reason. You listed a bunch of names and then said you didn't know if they were Chinese or not. Sounds foolproof.

If I could, I would. I'm a Rockets fan, if his foot has more recovery, it is better for the Rockets. That was the question. It is a safe assumption that Chinese people would want their best player to play for their team, just like I would want Kobe to play for the US. It is also a safe assumption that Rockets fans would want Yao to stay out to rest and not be able to play for a rival team in the Olympics.

    Moron.

I'd prefer he doesn't play. But I believe in the right of the player to play for his own country in the offseason. I think it should be his decision.

If I was the owner of the Rockets and there was no prior agreement (which of course, there is), I'd keep him out of the Olympics. That is how I took the OP's question, so that is how I voted. That would be in keeping with the best interests of the Rockets.

However, as a fan of basketball, I believe that anyone who wants to represent their country should be allowed to do so.

Dude.. you are close to being offensive (of course with you that's not surprising). Don't call people morons unless you aren't acting like one yourself.

Yes, all Rockets fans would rather Yao not play in the Olympics. That's a given.

But that wasn't the point of the poll. The point of the poll was "would you let him play or not." If you had the ultimate decision to let him play in the games or tell him it's forbidden which would you choose?

If Tmac was asked to play on the Olympic team we would all be excited about it, but as a Rockets fan wouldn't you be thinking in the back of your mind.. "crap... more wear and tear on Tracy. Maybe it would be better if he didn't play."

It's not about what your nationality is when tallying the vote, it's about the rights of an NBA owner versus the rights of a player in terms of the Olympics.

First, he called me a moron. Go to page 2.

And you are just stating my point. It would not be unreasonable to assume that Chinese fans and Rockets fans would have different opinions on this if they had the final decision.

Thank you for agreeing with me.
Understood. I just think Chinese fans are a little more Nationally oriented than Rockets oriented.

Excellent argument: For us to take that dream way for the sake of money and entertainment is selfish indeed

For all those that would keep Yao out of the Beijing Olympics, let me ask a question --

How do you think that would impact Yao's feelings regarding the Rockets and his commitment here?

Do you think he would accept the decision and soldier on for the Rockets? There's a part of me that thinks he would because he's wired that way, but this is soooo important to him. It appears that this will be the most important thing in his life -- to carry the torch, to light the flame, to suit up for the national team. I don't want to put words into Yao's mouth but I'd guess that he'd happily choose any Olympic medal (gold, silver or bronze) over a NBA championship, perhaps even 2.

I think keeping him out would potentially kill the relationship.

(To all the folks that said that you'd let him play in the Olympics and keep him out of the other offseason activities for China, I agree but that's an easy decision as a US based big time rockets fan).

“Winning an NBA championship is the biggest thing that can happen professionally, but representing your country with more than 30 million people cheering for you and then seeing you up there on top of the podium … it’s hard to find any words for that.” Manu Ginobili

Of COURSE he should play ... good grief!

    - The Olympics are in China this year.
    - He primarily came to the NBA to prep for the Olympics.
    - Its his dream.
    - He's proud to play for his country, and should be.
    - He's an international star, and this will be his stage.
    - Its in his contract. We knew this when we signed him.

I'm excited about him being in the Olympics this year.

My problem isn't the Olympics, but all the other stuff they ask him to do during the summers, so that he gets worn out, and doesn't have the rest he needs to protect him from injury, or stamina in the playoffs.

... but, not this summer. He's been focusing all his life for this.

He doesn't get as worn down playing for the CNT as he does for the Rockets......

The Rockets need to do everything they can to protect their investment....while he is here.....

i don't have a problem with him playing this year but this needs to be the last year for his CNT obligations. he needs to retire from the CNT.

There’s no one on the team that has more commitment than Yao Ming to win a title. You don’t consistently go into an arena hours before tip-off and put the leg work for the game that night and not have commitment. You questioning Yao Ming’s commitment to winning a title is like me questioning your fanhood for the Rockets.
