If the player feels that it's his honor to represent his country, I don't think it is right to refuse him such honor. That said, the Olympics is the only competition that is worth it. Yao shouldn't have competed in those Asian Games and World Games.

What a silly statement. An insurance policy only comes into play in the event of a career-ending injury. Not injuries which cause the player to annually miss half the season - a recurring theme with Yao.

I really hope you're not equating human rights abuses to an employer's hypothetical right to protect a contractual investment. wow.

I will pull for Yao accept againist the USA Team. I am glad he is playing. If he ended his career playing for his country I would not be happy but I would understand.

Yao not playing for China in the Olympics would be like Jordan not playing for the US -- if Yao is healthy he should be out there for his country.

However, playing anything other than limited minutes to shake the rust off in the FIBA Stankonia Cup is crazy -- if he plays heavy minutes and gets hurt...

I'd love to see him get the rest he needs. But no way would I keep him out of the games in his country. I wish that American born players were as committed to their country as Yao is.

Yao will never be the same Yao if the Rockets keep him out to play for his country in the Olympics and he will demand a trade right away.....

There isn't a way on this earth that I could effect Yao Ming's playing in the Olympics, or not.If he desires to do so and is a good healthy citizen of China, he will play! :p

    Down with capitalist pigs!

All joking aside, I think you're the one not making the connection here. It is a legit comparison, a little exaggerated of course. Yao being forbidden to play for the Chinese was never part of the contract in the first place

At least this pushes Yao's injury timetable up so he can recuperate in time for the playoffs!

How much money do you think the Rockets are making out of the Chinese market at the moment? Also do you think the Rockets are making more money from the Chinese market or the Houston market? To protect contractual investment, the Rockets MUST left Yao play, at least this time.

whAt about poor gramer? isnt it iritatin to?

if it were up to me? i'd let him play this go round seeing how it's in china... though any and all other country commitments should be ended. if cleveland can make big z sit out, we need to restructure yao's contract to be similar.

Im pulling for the USA to crush China and Argentina and Puerto Rico and every other damn country.

I defintely want Yao to be careful, and safe.

Yeah, I would let him. I think playing in the Olympics is an achievement a few people will ever get to experience.

It would be even better to hear your anthem played.

Too bad for Yao we will be hearing the Star Spangled Banner.

It's the Olympics, AND it's in China. He has to play. What I don't like is when he has to play meaningless games for his country.

not at all. the only comparison i want between the two is the control over the contract, similar to the one the cavs have.

In fact, it is the other way round. IIRC, in the contract with Houston Rockets, it is clearly stipulated that Yao Ming has to comply to CBA's summon for international duties. Otherwise, it is a breach of contract on Houston Rockets' part.

Similiar stipulations on Yi Jianlian's contract with Milwaukee Bucks and Wang Zhizhi's contract with Dallas Mavericks.

That was also the reason why Dallas Mavericks was upset, and did not re-sign Wang Zhizhi, when Wang Zhizhi unilaterally refused to return to China to join the national team in their training/preparation for the 2002 World Championship, but chose to stay in USA for the summer for his training camp and aimed to impress his prospective new employers, back in that summer of 2002. Da Zhi got banned by CBA and labelled as traitor, and got kicked out the national team as a consequnece.

As Big Yao fans, you people surely would not want to see that happen, would you?

He worked so hard on his rehabilitation throughout the past 3 months, and is right on track to be fully rehabilitated and ready for the Olympics on his own soil right in front of billions of his compatriots. And it is just not right to deprive him of this once-in-a-life-time opportunity to shine in the world stage of basketball.

I just felt ashamed for all those who had voted for keeping Yao out of the Beijing Olympics, and still calling themselves Rockets or Yao Ming fans. Yao Ming had reiterated so many times in his interviews that it is his biggest dream to be able to play in the 2008 Olympics. If he fails to do so, that will definitely be a huge disappointment to the Big Man, and will make him a very unhappy man.

Great info as usual Pryuen, but this is exactly why the rox will never win a title with Yao. Its not just about the Olympics to me, its the commitment to winning the title. Yao's size and body already points to a short career that will be injury riddled. The control the government has over his career is amazing to say the least. The nba allows gives him the stage to promote his causes and intrest. If not for the nba, Yao would just be another big guy playing ball for a remote team. I know yao is a man of principle and honor, but how much credit or payback does he have to give to the cnt?

Shaq's career has also been injury riddled but at least Shaq is smart enough to know that he should coast in the early part of the season. Feign and injury through the second part of the season and then come on strong in the final part. That has been his pattern and that's why he's nearly always ready to play come playoff time.
