That's mostly not true. If I'm not mistaken Lin didn't turn Asian after we released him. The Asian Market was always going to be there if he played good. Les said the decision to sign Lin was "all basketball". True Linsanity made him a bigger name but the benefits of Linsanity as a marketing point pretty much disappeared after he left New York. Personally I wanted Dragic... was disappointed we didn't resign him but Lin had a better overall year than Dragic and Lowry. Everyone looks at his numbers but the fact is when Harden sat Lin's numbers went up just like they did when Melo was out. That's the thing I want most for him to improve on. Take a more leadership role on offense even when Harden is on the court with him. Sure Harden is our best player but Lin needs to be more in charge of the offense and blance that role with harden. Lin was a smart basketball move and not a bad business move as well.
Easily Lin. His 8.3 million in cap space could have been used to snag a significant player in free agency this off season. White offers nothing, but he makes so little it doesn't matter.
Garcia was a nice surprise in the playoffs but regarding his contract, we picked him up mid season and he has a team option next year. That won't be exercised so his contract is a pretty favorable one that won't hinder us in free agency this summer. The thread topic is merely about contracts. There's no way Morey voids Lin's.
Yeah, but there's a difference in "playing bad" and playing scared. Not only did he shoot it terribly, but he also had no spring in his step, made terrible passes/decisions, and played lackluster defense. As much as you want to point out how "good" he played the final 2.5 months of the season, the fact of the matter remains that all we care about really is the playoffs. LeBron James has long been thought to be the best player on the planet, but all people talked about was how he played small in the playoffs. Then last year came and he showed up big in the playoffs and now everyone (except for Gary Washburn...lol) concedes that he's the best in the Universe. Jeremy Lin can give 17/8 all season long if he wants, but the fact remains that most rocket fans would've probably rather had Nate Robinson in the 1st round than Jeremy Lin considering he don't ever play scurrrrrred!!!
Well yeah it's obvious that Lin would be more valuable to the team in a trade rather than simply just voiding his contract. But that wasn't the hypothetical question that was asked. The team obviously can't legally do what the OP asked, it was just a random hypothetical thrown out there for discussion.
Lin is already better. Morey said Lin contributes to 3rd most wins on the team. More than Parsons and Lin is young, smart and has a great work ethic and just said he has never been more motivated to improve. That's coming from a kid who has worked hard to get to where he is now. I expect he develops a better floater and midrange and that the game gets a little slower for him. I expect he will shoot closer to 40% from behind the arc. I expect we will see a noticeable improvement when the season starts. No, I am not asian. Just a Rocket only fan who thinks Lin is a big part of this team moving forward.
I have absolutely no axe to grind. I'm a rockets fan, but if I'm going to be labeled as anything, I'm a Morey Only Fan....which means all I care about is the journey and results. I don't care about the side stories.
White has an expiring contract. If the Rockets really wanted to they could package his 1.7 million contract with 3 million cash to a team in the red.
<br> Um, how is it obvious Lin is on a good contract? Jose Calderon has put up consistently good numbers with very few turnovers at a great shooting percentage his whole career on less money than Lin has made this year. I think only in the last two years has he made *slightly* more money than Lin made this year.
Lol considering his per 36 numbers and vast improvement throughout the year coupled with his potential,, Lin's contract is very reasonable if not a bargain
Thomas Robinson was the 5th pick of the draft not even 12 months ago and is a fresh 22... I would think he still has trade value and upside, selling him as possibly following Tristan Thompson's career path. If he doesn't, you can decline his option, making him an expiring contract after this coming season. Garcia is a free agent if the team declines the team option this summer. No need to void that deal. First off, I voted Royce. It's public... take a look. Secondly, this is not "cutting" a player -- it's "voiding" a contract. You don't seem to have a good understanding of that because you're focused on what they're doing right now. No kidding Jeremy Lin is much more important to this team than Royce White, but that's not the question. Everything in today's NBA with team building is based on cap room and salary. Why would the Rockets amnesty a player who averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, one year removed from 18+ and 8+? I can guarantee he's showing up on some "third best player on the team" list. Wouldn't that be stupid? Yet that's exactly what the Rockets did with Luis Scola. Why? Because they had others to play and groom for the position and they could do more with the cap room alone created by clearing the contract than they could in any trade. I don't think I would void Lin's contract because I liked how he progressed at the end and I still see some upside. He's got two years left... that's a good time frame to determine if there's something more there. But the question posed in the thread boils down to: If Player X's contract disappeared, could the Rockets use the $Y million in cap room in a more impactful way to help this team than by simply having Player X for Z more years? Royce White is an obvious yes, but the Y and Z are small. In Lin's case, even though he's a productive player, you'd weigh what you have to replace him (Beverley) and his cost, along with what you could do with the cap room created, to make the decision. There are other factors as well, such as how many fans you'd lose, but I'm talking about strictly building a basketball team. They are the only two options on that list worth considering -- that's all I'm saying. You're right -- it was a stupid thread. You have no clue if the whopping THREE people who voted Lin are yanking your chain, sick of the Lin discussion, tired of Lin fans or what. Again, it was a stupid thread.
ok.... was only using 17/7 'cause that's what was brought up earlier on the thread but if you want to use his season average of 14 and 6, ok. so how much is the going rate for a 14 and 6 pg? and how much extra cap space are you really going to have? are we talking 5mil vs. 8mil? so 3mil difference? not a whole lot if you're trying to land a max guy. or you can go all the way down to bev and take his very small sample size of 12 and 2.5 as a starter. do you think that's good enough at the starting pg spot? 'cause if you think so, then that gives you a lot more to work with.
Jose Calderon 2009-10: 10.3 pts, 5.9 assists cap hit: $8.2M 2010-11: 9.8 pts, 8.9 assists cap hit: $9M 2011-12: 10.5 pts, 8.8 assits cap hit: $9.87M 2012-13: 11.3 pts, 7 assists cap hit: $11.05M Jeremy Lin 2012-13: 13.4 pts, 6.1 assists cap hit: $8.3M
Wow.... you are so wrong that I don't even know how I can address this... Someone else can do the work for me.
i seriously don't know what people are expecting from a starting pg at 8mil/yr. lin is not a bargain, but not overpaid either. just about there, just about market value. i think the fact that most of the players on this team has very cheap contracts compared to their market value (especially parsons) makes people believe that all contracts should be the same. you give up lin and bring in someone that produces about the same, you'll be paying about the same. unless you bring in someone that produces significantly less, for significantly less price, because you believe that the team can succeed with a significantly less player at PG that "fits" better. btw, whatever happened to the best backcourt in the nba moniker from the first two games of the season? i still think lin and harden can fit very well next to each other and be the most explosive backcourt in the nba. we've seen examples of that; not as frequent as we'd liked, but the potential is there.
Thanks for giving a more detailed explanation of your view point. I think your comments on Lin are entirely fair and i agree with most of them. I don't agree with you that Beverly is ready to step up, I think people vastly overrate him, though he does have potential. As for Lin fans... it's not 3 people, it's 67. 30% of all votes. I respectfully suggest that if you want less Lin discussion and less 'defending' from Lin fans that you clamp down a little harder on some of the obvious trolling and baiting that is going on on the forums.
