Its entirely possible that this is the worst possible thing you could do for the man's legacy. For instance, imagine Orson Wells had been killed immediately after completing Citizen Kaine. People would still be talking about all the great films that were never made. His entire life was a long slide to mediocracy from that point on.

Think of all the stuff he could have screwed up from that point on. All the ineviatable no-win pitfalls of reconstruction got blamed on someone else.
