What is the argument for anyone not picking Michael Jordan?

He is almost universally agreed upon as the best in the game, how do we come up with someone different?

    Wilt Chamberlain.
Yeah, not the most popular choice but he was the Dwight before Dwight. And an ultra rich man's Dwight as well. Would be exciting and I'd posit if you surrounded this guy with four shooters they would be unstoppable.

I don't know, is the question asking who is "the best" player or who WE would build our team around?

Jordan. The 2nd best SG ever is a bigger drop than any other position.

I'd agree with the OP. Magic, then other multi-position types like LeBron and Bird. The key is, they can be great players without limiting your other great players in any way.

If you start with Jordan but you also have Kobe. Kobe would end up playing as a role player with limited touches.

In any other era, I would agree with you. Every team started with a dominant center in the past. But in today's game with all of the touch fouls, maybe only Wilt and Hakeem have enough finesse and skill to still remain dominant. Shaq’s power game would cause him to pick up fouls every time he was in the post.

My first choice would be Hakeem with Magic a close second and Jordan next.

I agree with Red Glare, I think I'd have to know what kind of rules we were playing with before I could make a decision.

If we were playing now I probably pick Magic, Bird, Jordan, and maybe Hakeem (since Hakeem would allow for switches on the pick and roll and you could play him at the 4).

Probably the big Aristotle... Shaq was a man amongst boys (unless he was playing dream lol)

30 and 15 plus a few blocks every single game

Because Jordan isn't the answer to every basketball related question ever asked... I think Jordan has somehow become mythologized since his retirement, I'm sorry but I don't think he is head and shoulders above everyone else to ever play the game like some 50 year olds like to think. Yes he is the GOAT but I would still pick Dream over him in the draft.
