If you could reinvent the game of basketball, what would you change?

The problem is that in basketball, the ball is continuously touching the ground. If I were allowed to kick the ball, then I, as a defender, would use the longest part of my body to steal the ball away during a dribble. Yes, the dribbler would adjust his game, but he might be called for palming.

 

Teams with three worst records pick 4-6. No maximum contracts. Larry Bird exception limited to 50% of cap.

 

Go EPL style...

Bottom 2-3 teams get sent to the D League. Top teams in D League go to NBA.
This will somewhat ruin the farm system, but whatever.

 

What I would change, not in any specific order:

1. Half court shots are worth 4 points.
2. Full court shots between the 84-94 feet mark are worth 10 points.

3. Every flop you commit in a game, results in that many games you are suspended for.

4. Hand checking/more physical contact anywhere on the court, unless it's an obvious foul: allowed.

5. NO KOBE CALLS... however you want to imagine that.

6. Death penalty for ref's who gamble to cheat for teams to win and etc, aka Crawford.

7. Take away offensive goal-tending.

8. Traveling should seriously be 2 steps.. and not 4 or 5?

9. Change playoff series back to 5 games OR limit total 12 teams into the playoffs.

10. Give the coaches 2 or 3 challenges, like the NFL has. This would be awesome.


11. Change shot clock from 24 seconds to 30 seconds.

12. No age limit. If you're amazing, you should be able to get drafted to play the game.

13. No kick balls. If it happens.. it happens. Let the game continue.

 

Only the Rockets can win championships and Jeremy Lin errwhere.

 

Eliminate superstar calls

Let's see just how far ahead of the curve they really are.

 

Put the basket against the floor like a soccer goal so that height was not an advantage.

 

I would use peach baskets instead of metal rims.

 

Soccer like celebrations every time someone gets posterized. Take the time to rub it in.

 

Yeah, I don't know why people want to eliminate charging. That would give all the advantage to big players recklessly bulling his way to the basket. There's a reason why charging is in the rule book in the first place.

If you allow charging, you will have to allow football style tackling too. It wouldn't be pretty basketball.

 

Re-institute hand checking.

The game is at it's best when it's allowed to flow. When one team gets on a roll and the other side can't go to talk to the coach, they have to dig themselves out of a hole on their own.

1) No Technical for celebrations/stare downs after a big play

This next one has a couple of parts.
2a) Each team is given a warning once a player has flopped.
b) A flop after the warning is an automatic ejection.

To do this it touches on what a poster above mentioned earlier about the Head Coach having the ability to challenge a decision such as in the NFL.

Offensive foul called.
Coach challenges.
Goes to a neutral person/team of people who review the play and they overturn and deem it was a flop.
Coach keeps his challenge as it was successful.
Flopping player is ejected from the game.
Team is down a player.
No charge was seen after that.
