I'd like to pick that time where..... rape in a dark alley... wasn't illegal sigh..... nothing beats the good ol' days.
I saw that fight in a little family-run pensione in Venice, Italy. A girl and I had arrived by train very late, and were stumbling around with our backpacks, trying to find a place open. It was about 3 am, I think. It sure felt like it. We saw a light on down a narrow alley, and trudged down to take a look. It didn't look like much. Just a door in a stone building several hundred years old, and looking every bit of it. We could hear noise inside, though, so we kept knocking until someone finally opened it to see who the hell we were. I asked if they had a room, and someone beckoned us in, yelling, "Ali-Frazier! Ali-Frazier! After fight!" The small lobby/living room was crowded with Italians watching a TV, and the fight had just started. We found a place to sit on the floor, and watched one of the most incredible fights I've ever seen. They gave us a couple of glasses, and kept filling them with wine that was being passed around. After the fight, we were taken to a little room upstairs, with a small window that looked out onto a scene from a painting. Then we made love. One of the best times I had on that trip, and I had a lot of them.
I would go to game six of the 1997 Western Conference Finals and break John Stockton's legs during halftime.
All games of the '94 and '95 Finals. If I had to pick one, game 7 of '94, I guess. I had to go to stupid camp at the time, and didn't get to see either series. I got to read about it in the papers, but everyone know that doesn't even come close to comapring.
-The game in San Antonio where David Robinson was being awarded the MVP trophy and Hakeem destroyed him. That is the sports event of my life as a fan. -From a pure basketball drama standpoint, I would like to go back and see game 5 of the 1987 NBA finals between the Lakers and Celtics when Bird and Magic traded big shots and Magic won it with the baby hook. Hell, I would have loved to have been at any game between the Lakers and Celtics during that entire period. The Celtics and 76'ers had a great rivalry during that period, too. -Mike Scott's no-hitter to clinch the '86 Division against the Giants. -The Houston Oilers beating the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football and Earl Campbell being the greatest running back in the world before the world. I get goosebumps when I think of the "Love Ya Blue" era. We used to have "Luv Ya Blue" Fridays at my elementary school where they would play the Oilers fight song on the intercom and we would march around the room like we were on the team. -Besides the Ali-Frazier fights (which all ruled....read "The Ghosts of Manilla" by Mark Kram about their third fight) I would have loved to have seen these fights live: Aaron Pryor vs. Alexis Arguello/ Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns/Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Jake LaMotta (the 1951 "St. Valentine's Massacre" fight)....there are bunch I am leaving out, but these are the big fights for me. -Game six 1975 World Series between the Red Sox and Reds.... the Fiske homer game. High drama. -The UCLA vs. Houston Cougars game at the Astrodome where the Coogs behind Elvin Hayes stopped the Bruins' 47 game winning streak.
Ahh... that was probably the best game I've ever been to, outcome wise. I was going nuts, as was all of Houston. I think the best part of it was trying to drive home, and having everyone getting out of their cars and screaming. Memories
