where in bali? i don`t want to stay in kuta, i don`t want to stay at a dirty a** hotel with drunks running around everywhere. somewhere quieter and more beautiful, but close to the party scene.

If you want beaches / parties go to Thailand. If you want history/culture, go to China. If you want to see amazing landscape, Mongolia. If you want to thread the beaten path, go to Cambodia. If you want to make amends, go to Vietnam, and if you want to surf, go to Bali/Indonesia. Phillipines if you want spanish speaking. Korea if you want a Japanese like experience but don't mention that to anyone Korean.

I agree. Indonesia is an amazing country and there is plenty of stuff to see and do besides sitting in traffic in Jakarta. I've been to Indonesia's three largest cities (Jakarta, Suryabaya and Medan) and I don't recommend either of them except for stopping off points to go somewhere else.

You might want to check out Sanur. Its got a beautiful beach but isn't quite the party scene of Kuta. You can also go to Ubud which is the cultural center of Bali and is in the foothills of the mountains. If you have money there are some world class resorts on Jimbarin south of Kuta. Bali isn't that big and it is relatively easy to get around so no matter where you go you can still hit the other places.

I'm chinese-american and i can tell you that if you go to china, hong kong is basically the asian NYC. Shanghai: there's two sides, separated by the HuangPu river. PuDong (the east side) is where you want to be if you want the clubs, modern style, etc. PuXi (west side) is the historical side. Beijing is probably the most chaotic (all cities are x100 worse than manhattan) but has the most history. Southern cities (below the yangtze river) tend to be more modern. I find the people there a lot friendlier, and the food better. Personal opinion of course.

If i were you, i'd go to india or thailand.

I went to Bali a few months ago, I must admit, it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I was expecting Hawaii (like they show on TV), but it's a bit different I guess, especially since it's predominantly a strong Hindu area. Also why would you go to Jakarta?? It's nothing but traffic, pollution, and floods right now, since it's the rain season there.

    Other Indonesian spots:

My personal choice would be Mongolia for the landscape alone.

    Places that I've visited:

Hong Kong - I go every year, really a place you need to visit at least once.
Beijing - Unbelievable history and sightseeing, highly recommended.
Shanghai - Might as well drop by if you're in the area.
    Shenzhen - Skip
Urumqi - Remote city on the border of Mongolia.
Bali - Went a long time ago, nice vacation.
    Kota Kinabalu - See Bali.
Phuket - The BEST vacation I've ever been on, period.
Tokyo - No place like it, one of the coolest cities I've visited.
Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, Can Tho, Ha Noi) - Very rich culture, a lot of history as well.

    Places I want to visit:
    Seoul
    Kuala Lampur
    India
