If you could go anywhere in Asia (except Japan), where would you go?

Visit Sentosa Island in Singapore. It is like a magical word.

Hong Kong is also an option. Very modern and bustling.

Go to Sri Lanka and visit the Kanadalama Hotel in Dambulla built in the middle of the rainforest. The best of the South Asian countries to visit.

No one mentions VIETNAM? Halong bay rocks. Great culture, still cheap.

Seoul was boring after a few days for me. I do like HK and Singapore gets a third.

These are the places I've been in Asia and most I've many times.

    Seoul
    Beijing
    Tokyo
    KL
    Singapore
    Bangkok
    Phuket
    Saigon
    Nha Trang
    Hanoi
    Kuala Lumpur
    Dehli
    Bangalore
    Hong Kong

And out of all them, the Thailand cities are the most fun. The people are the nicest, many speak English, the food is great, and its pretty darn cheap.

Seoul is like any big city. The problem is that most people don't speak english and its really expensive. Tokyo is the same way.

Vietnam is ok except it still is still 20 year behind the countries in terms of development so some things are just a pain. Its not all that cheap either. It has become the new hip place to go for backpackers who think Thailand is too touristy and old hat.

Singapore and Hong Kong are similar. Lots to eat and buy, except Hong Kong is dirty and polluted and Singapore is pristine.

Beijing is different from everything is else. Big, fairly modern city, but you still millions on their bikes. Plenty of tourist friendly places, but you see military guards too. Its very much a city in transition. It has everything.

BTW, when I ask my friends who live in SE Asian where the best place to visit it, its always Thailand and Indonesia. I hear a lot of recommendations for Java.

I think he was being sarcastic. India is not the place you want to go as a tourist.

India is loaded with tourists. It's just more of a place for young backpacking types.

    Bhutan

I have never been there before. But one of my friends spent a couple weeks there and he told me that it was a great country.

They have the happiest residents in the world. I guess just to find out why would be your best reason to take a visit there.

i've been to seoul about 3 times plus 2 very short visits (about 2 days). its a good place and the shopping is pretty good.

To the OP, it really depends on what you want from the trip. if you are looking for a romantic trip with your wife, probably south east asia is your best bet. Places like Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia have great beaches and holiday resorts that are perfect for couples. My personal favourite is Bali, incredible beaches and the resorts are damn nice too (the girls are great as well...though u are going with ur wife...so this is probably off limits to you).

If you are looking for shopping, Hongkong, seoul, shanghai, bangkok are all great destinations, though thailand is probably cheaper but no where near the kind of quality/brands/styles of hongkong.

If you are just wanting to go to asia to experience the culture, then i would personally say go to china. In china you can experience a much wide variety of cultures which incorporate parts of other asian cultures as well. Places like inner mongolia, yunnan, hongzhou, suzhou...are great to experience different cultures of china and eastern asia. obviously you got ur large cities like shanghai and beijing, but personally i don't think they are great tourist attractions other than the great wall. India is pretty good for cultural stuff too, but personally i don't like there...think the cities were a bit unorganised and the overall feeling i got there was not that great. also i am not a curry fan :)

    Hope this helps.

I hear great stuff about Thailand. Maldives would be pretty cool for a week vacation if you want sun and water.

I think I'd go to Malaysia. I taught English to a Korean businessman and this was the country he recommended. It's supposed to be incredible.

Second choice would be Cambodia to visit Ankor Wat.

Dude the only reason to go to another country is the food.. We're Americans, all we do is eat, eat, eat...
