Is baldness a result of heredity on the mother's side of the family or the father's? I've consistently heard that your mother's father is the best indication you'll have of going bald, but here recently people have been talking about their father being bald and fearing that they themselves would be bald in the future. Which is it?

good question... my mother's father has a full head of hair at the ripe old age of 82, but my dad started balding in his late 20s...

so I guess i'll be the experiment to figure out which one is true, b/c I've heard both from different people...

god I hope my mom's genes win out!!!! :D

It is most definitely your mother's side of the family.

man I'm glad I'm not alone. I feel you pain. My dad was bald at 20 so I've feared baldness my whole life. I'm now 33 and if I was jewish you wouldn't even know I was fighting baldness. The bald spot is getting so bad I've warned the wife this is my last year with hair. I'm going to try completely bald and if that doesn't work out I'll opt for very very short.

I'm just curious but for those of you who have thinning hair, how fast does it come out and is it noticable as soon as it started thinning?

Dude you HAVE to shave your bean.

Chicks dont care about the whole receding hairline thing as long as you keep it short and dont have a freaking comb-over.

Shave it, buy some clippers at Wal-Mart for $19.99 and shave it whenever it gets to long, or have your significant other do it for you.

I wish you were right. My mom's dad is 89 and has a full head of hair. My dad's dad also had a full head of hair his entire life. My dad lost his hair in his 20s and so have I.

Yea, drapg, I have. And I want to say that I appreciate all the inputs. I am going to try to get it cut even shorter the next time but not go bald.

    Manny,

I started going bald when I was 17, first the widow's peak, and then it really went downhill when I went to college.

I fought it for years, trimming the sides with the clippers and getting the rest cut really shortm, but the little bit left on the front grew so fast, it looked really dumb.

Two months ago, I got my whole head trimmed with the clippers on #3, and it looks a lot better. My understanding is that the super-short hairstyle is in among the balding guys, and the ladies love it, so go for it.

I have decided to get my head shaved this Friday. I have been putting it off for some time, but it is time to put up or shut up to speak.

I'll have to see how it looks.

One question for VOR and anyone else who shaves their head:

Do you go to tanning beds so your head doesn't look so white?? If you do, how much time do you spend in the tanning bed??

    Thanks

I'm afraid to see my head. I have what feel like two bumps on the top that would probably look like a camels back. God help me. Luckily I"m not going bald yet.

Propecia works really well. Anyone thats losing their hair and wants to stop the fallout should give it a try. The price might be a little steep for some~$1000/year. They say in the extreme cases, a mixed treatment of micro hair transplant($5000-8000) + propecia could eliminate balding completely and still give you a very natural look...if you have the cash, they can give you the look you want. Technology is great.

    PS: I'm not only the hair club president...but I'm also a client.:D

you have made the right choice :)

as far as the goofy whiteness, well that only lasted like 2 days for me. I purposely shaved during early spring just as I was begining to spend more time in the outdoors. I was a lifeguard at the time and I wanted my dome to aclimate before I subjected it to those long hours of sun.

to more directly answer your question, give yourself 2 days or so for it to even out naturally. it tans up just as fast as your regular skin. I would never do it in a tanning booth. your head gets a ton of sun naturally, but your hair usually blocks it.

also most people will be so freaked by your lack of hair that they will think you look funny anyways. the coloration difference they will not likely notice much.

and for gods sake, USE THE MACH 3

first use a buzzer with no attatchments, then follow with the razor. I find it easiest in the shower, and i done even use shaving cream. the warm water softens the hairs far better than any shaving cream has helped. also, no clean up, you are already clean in the shower :)

    PEACE

in a sick, twisted, and demented way, a VERY SMALL part of me is looking forward to my balding years b/c i'm tired of combing, moussing, geling, and styling my hair everyday. part of me is looking forward to the shaved head look... of course people will probably think I look like i'm from a concentration camp as well, due to my physique (or lack thereof)

A stupid question, is there any age where you could normally say if you haven't started balding by THAT age, you probably won't anymore or can disaster still strike at any time? :)

Well, I think I might be the biggest p***y in the whole wide world.:(

VOR - you have my permission to berate the **** out of me.

I chickened out in getting the noodle shaved because I don't know why for sure other than the fact that I am a giant p***y.

Okay, actually, several people, whose opinions are dear to me, came to me and begged me to re-consider. I then got to thinking how I would look with a bald head & I just couldn't picture it.

But as a last resort, I asked the girl that was going to cut my hair what she thought & she felt that I would look better with just a very short haircut.

So, I got what was called like a "Number 2 Fade". I like it and several people have complemented me on it. I guess it is a similar style to what Behad does to his hair.

The only thing that I need to do is to do a better job of getting it cut. 4 weeks to 6 weeks will probably be my time frame in getting it cut again instead of waiting over 2 months.
