Hmmm, I must have missed out. BTW, feel free to "arrange an accident" for Don so I can get more gigs. I haven't played with ya'll since early September.
I miss playing jazz. Thank you for this thread. Bing and Louis = damn entertaining. Let us know when y'all play. I'd love to hear you....assuming you're talking about a gig of your own vs. high school band.
Here are 2 of mine: www.myspace.com/thirdcoastswingband ; www.swinghouston.com www.soundprooftheband.com (off and on whenevery they want a horn)
BTW, here's a short vid of Third Coast Swing at this years Harvest Moon Ball (mostly just audio from us and video from the dancers) <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/k_mL5oHeOAw&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/k_mL5oHeOAw&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
What do you play? I was a (tenor) sax player myself. I haven't really touched it since I graduated from college, but I played for over 15 years.
I'm a sax player. Got my degree in Jazz Studies. I'm playing mostly tenor now. I played mostly alto in college and play alto whenever I get the chance to sub in in Ima's band. I'm going into the Navy next year as a full time musician.
Very cool. Where'd you go to school and how long have you been playing? I'd love to get back into it if I could ever find the time. sorry for any potential derailment going on....
Been playing about 15 years, seriously for 6. I started at UH intending to be a band director. Wasn't ready for college, took a year or two off, then went to San Jac where I studied with Larry Slezak, one of Houston's heavyweight jazz saxophonists. Fell in love with jazz. After 2 years there I transfered to Texas State. I started out as Music Ed with an emphasis in Jazz Studies but eventually realized that while I want to teach, I don't want to teach high school. Not in Texas where marching band and competions rule and jazz is put on the back burner and is really only there to get the school more points in competition. So I switched to jazz studies. I graduated in 2006. I tried to get the full time gig in the Navy last year but because of typical military BS, they didn't like some meds I was on so I had to get off of them and wait a year. Anyway, they're going to play me to play music and pay off my student loans and pay for my Masters degree and part of my Doctorate. I hope to teach on the collegiate level at some point.
Very cool indeed. This would be something to consider especially since they pay off your student loans, if I didn't have the whole family thing going. I've always seen those fliers around advertising more or less for military musicians. One of my teachers was staff arranger when he was in the military. Good times as he describes them. I want to teach in college too some day.
In the top jazz ensemble at Texas State, our jazz trumpet player and bass player came out of the Navy bands. Both had been students, left to join the Navy, and were back finishing their degrees. Our drummer came out of the Air Force Band of the West in San Antonio. He made it in straight out of high school which is really difficult with the Air Force bands. Anyway, all are killer players who work a lot in Austin and San Antonio. A friend of mine who played 2nd tenor in the band (I was lead alto) went in just a few days after we both graduated. He finished basic training and music school and got to his assignment last January. So he's been in for about a year and is enjoying it thus far.
