never happen, before over population reaches us on earth the NSC and CIA will decide to eliminate several billions with either nukes or diseases so we can start over

also heard that we cant even leave this orbit. never went to moon (ever wonder why we havent been back since, and if its true how come the technology allowed it in 1969 but not now without all these mysterious "mechanical flaws")

something that even if we build the space shuttle to withstand heat, it still will melt if we ever tried to reach moon. there are several clues in the "life magazine moon cover" that depict my theory to be true. all staged ala capricorn one

now, lets say im wrong and we do reach other planets, hummmm,on second thought james cameron is a dumbass. we cant survive anywhere in the milky way because of our body temperature yet we reach pandora? right. thats why i didnt waste my $30 by seeing that chessy kids movie

Probably a little bit of both on the more primitive planets with very few species of animals, I'd imagine. But most often by governments, who would be funding the project to other planets and wasting taxpayer on things that are completely useless to progress. It would almost have to be completely habitable for most companies to take on such project, unless it was a tourist attraction. There'd be no point for a company to buy a planet, if it can be used for profit or reducing the cost of production (or a tax free loopholes they could use). Besides, what would stop a government from claiming ownership over a given planet. It's not like individuals (this includes NGOs, since according some they do represent a citizen/individual) could claim the given planet or area for a long period of time without any resistance from a government back home. Especially, since most companies and individuals do not have their own personal military. Trying to settle it in court would be absolute mess . . .unless land occupation is similar to planet occupation.

On the other hand, no one, if the place has already been taken over or ruled by a dominant race of creatures or a lifeform that could be particularly destructive or nasty to humans (some unusual plague that could destroy the human body in seconds or worse a race Xenomorph-like creatures). If it is some autocratic empire in charge of the planet, they'd destroy or eliminate anything headed for that Solar System with powerful electromagnetic pulse from some unknown location. Also, it could simply be that certain planets are unoccupied, because they are a few weeks from being demolished for hyperspace bypass.

Much worse things would be finding a 3 headed dragon, disappearing/reappearing laughing jackals, a fairly small airship carrying troops in white armor with helmets that look like halloween mask and a guy wearing a black uniform/cape with a funny look samurai mask to ground and building some unusual command center, or even some weird-looking guy with a funny haircut and an usually long brown monkey tail that looks like he is only wearing black spandex and a navy bluish chest plate with bulky shoulder pads standing next to an empty pod.

Funny thing about the things in the last paragraphs, I could see our people laughing those things off as only minor disturbances with locals. If only they knew . . .

It would be even funnier, if our side try to go down and make peace with some of the parties and offer to split up some of the land/resources to benefit both sides (and even offer development opportunities to help the other side improve a few things).

It'll probably be similar to how westward expansion was handled in this country. Except with more countries and more corporations, because of the larger scale of settlement...

I wouldn't look to Avatar for guidance. Initially it will be under somesort of UN treaty of joint cooperation like Antarctica and the Moon but after awhile individual countries will carve out their own territory and eventually the residents there will probably push for their own sovereignity.

I strongly doubt that even the US would allow a company to own a whole planet.

What can the U.S. do about it? Have some inter-planet war? Didn't a company pretty much run India for 100 years?

It would not probably involve all countries on Earth to be a part of some kind of UN treaty of joint cooperation if it really is like Antarctica and the Moon, so what about the other countries that just don't qualify for the project? Would they just sit quiet and suck it up?

Also, if there are plenty of planets out there for us to colonize and it's just suitable for us human beings to inhabit, is that possible we push for our own sovereignity on one planet and the other does the same or similar on another?

    Just a thought.

I don't know but if I owned one, I'd build one hell of a slide back to Earth.

It'll still be countries, just like the old days when Europe was colonizing and discovering America...it might be a company that does 90% of the work, but they would be subsidized and ordered by the country the company belongs in (ie British East India Company, Hudson Bay Company) If there were indigenous aliens on the planet though, the first colonists would probably go through a real life enactment of 'Aliens' or 'Starcraft'.

Run is one thing. Own is another. The US would likely license off things like mineral rights and might even subcontract companies to handle things like construction of space bases and terraforming, perhaps a new market for KBR, but not own.

The East India Company never owned India. They had a concession to run trade but the British Government still controlled it. Given the costs and sensitive political nature of colonizing a planet its doubtful any government would turn that over to a corporation or that any corporation would take that on when it would be cheaper and more profitable to handle things under a license or lease from the government.
