If we draft Sheppard or Castle, what does that mean for Jalen Green?

It would mean we were going in a different direction because otherwise Clingan would be a 3rd string center.... but it's also why we're not interested in Clingan.

Yup. If someone is going to replace Green's role it's going to be through a trade that gets someone like Mitchell. If he against it but that would be the route that would have to be taken if the front office thinks Green isn't it. It isn't going to be from internal development of guys like Cam or hypothetically Sheppard. And it's because of Green's "non replicable skill set on the roster" as Stone puts it.

I’d rather role with Cam and Reed Sheppard than Jalen

    Clingan is a defensive prodigy.

    Don't you mean inconsistent?

"Awful" doesn't do this on 68% FG and a +32.

    Just saying.

Having “the #3 pick” doesn’t mean quite the same thing when the draft is weak at the top.

BASED ON THEIR STOCK GOING INTO THEIR RESPECTIVE DRAFTS, I would easily take Jalen Green, Jabari Smith and Amen Thompson over anyone in this draft. And if the rumored draft-night medical issues were non-existent, add Cam Whitmore to that list. I think Alperen Sengun would be getting serious consideration for the top overall pick. And Tari Eason would likely go in the top 10 picks.

    Brian 'Cheerleader' Cook was better.

It doesn't mean anything, if he plays next season consistently well (like most month is around 58% true shooting or better, last season he was 54% average and 61% in march.) even at a little bit lower usage, then he's great, definitely around rookie max guy, if he's closer to this year's overall stats, then you're kinda in a more ok we'll sign you to a next contract at a certain price but there's a walk away and we are open to trade you.

You'll worry about the fit of Castle / Sheppard in after 3 or even 4 seasons when you have to make that decision on their next contract.

Castle or Sheppard can fit around a good Jalen Green just fine. ok you're a little bit more iffy on Sheppard longer term because the two combine is really a bit on the small side (but still bigger than say, Dame + CJ ).

Castle in a vacuum might be a better prospect in terms of fit floor (because he's more of a wing sized guy.) but the problem is the Rockets have quiet a few awesome defense theoretical shooter young wing already. Sheppard the argument is that the path to playing time is far more obvious, he'll take at least the Aaron Holiday minutes year one and if he's good he'll eventually take a lot of the current Fred Van Vleet minutes and in the perfect world you have a 3 guard combo of Amen / Green / Sheppard.

I don't see Castle playing over Amen (probably the closest comp to him on our roster in role and skill. think of him as a less extreme version, both on the positive and negative side.) I may see him play over Cam or Tari but the odds aren't super high, but either way even though wings are in theory in easiest to fit into a lineup we do have a ton of them right now that needs some playing time.

Also, people tend to undersell the potential upside of floor general PG who isn't super high usage or jump out of the gym, we have plenty of low end all star to all time greats in that mold. that's not to say that what we should expect Sheppard to be, but it is certainly something to think about if you're just basing all your argument against him on the ceiling part.

My opinion on Jalen right now is that the whole body of work so far only suggest something more like a 6th man, BUT the flashes and age and the small things progression certainly gives me hope, and I would be really pained to give it up and not try to see it through for as long as I can reasonably hold on to him. There is obviously a world where he just gets more consistent and routinely destroy opposing teams and is a clear cut all star, but at least the whole sample right now says he's not there... yet, he isn't certain to be there but the odds are certainly way better than your generic young guards

Jalen's fate is in his own hands, has nothing to do with Reed Sheppard or anybody else the Rockets draft.

    GSW won with Klay
    Denver won with Murray
    Boston gonna win with White

Rockets can win with an efficient mostly offball c&s who can out the ball on the floor SG

it can;t win with a missed shot creator

I really wanna make a snarky comment but it’s so not worth it so let me remind you all that on June 12, 1995, the Rockets were in really good shape.

More worried about how any of those two will sniff decent minutes. Cam and Jalen are projecting to have excellent seasons under Udoka’s development.

Sheppard is a PG in the NBA he won’t be good at guarding SG’s as a rookie. He’s not even going to out defend Jalen at SG, never mind the wide gap in ability to get to the rim - by far the most important shot a SG takes.

Could argue that Shepp's development is in his own hands as well.

GSW won with Klay? lol they won with the greatest shooting back court of all time

Murray is a PG and he does get to the rim

Boston going to win with the greatest defensive backcourt of all time

Yes if you create a historically elite advantage elsewhere you can reduce your dependency on creation at the rim it but you will have to replace it with a greater volume of interior shot creation elsewhere (Draymond, Jokic, Brown/Tatum).

Be realistic guys there’s no reason to create a disadvantage for ourselves that we have to bandaid later. We’re picking from a pool of tremendous talent. Our own pool is elite winning half its games with the entire core getting minutes and under 22 years old.

Just get the BPA. If you want Sheppard you better understand that in this league he’s either a PG or he’s a role player. If his passing doesn’t translate you’re in major trouble.

I really wish the Rox would win something in the next 5 years because it has been too long.

Even if that is solely the 'In Season tournament'.

Other managements were just so much better in the last 20 years.

If someone else had the no. 1 pick, I think they would take Jalen straight up in a heartbeat. Atlanta already has Trae and Murray so Green would have no where to play. This draft is really bereft of talent.
