I'm thinking Mario Elie or Donnie Nelson. Not just another retread, please!! Calvin would be great, but Les apparently hates his guts.
I have said the same thing many times....PJ Carlisemo, or Mike Dunleavy would be my picks. Rudy would be my top choice, but I think he has lost the fire. I have never liked JVG.....and think Larry Brown is an ass. DD
I am a Van Gundy supporter, but I do see that he is wearing thin, on himself and the players. It is a bad situation. TMac injured or in a funk all year Yao injured Rafer injured Sura out Sura was probably last season's team leader. If all the pieces are in place the Van Gundy 'brutally honest' bashing doesn't affect the players psych like it does when there are injuries beyond their control To over and over blame effort when the bottom line is talent is tiring. I like the JVG on the court coaching and the honesty but the bashing is a bad thing when the team just doesn't have the talent healthy. If no one had been injured this season and TMac would be TMac we would be battling right now for a 4-5 seed.
MARIO ELLIE Mario has fire in his belly and Rocket Red blood. We need a Coach that has Rockets tradition and the fire to inspire. Mario has been through all levels of Baskletball and would be a players coach. And most of all he understands the role and need of the game to go through Yao Ming.
I would love Rudy to come back, but I wouldn't want him coaching if it's going to affect his health. Just dreaming here, but wouldn't it be great to have Rudy T as head coach, with Mario and Calvin assisting?!
Why would JVG quit? Cause he seems down? C'mon...he may say one thing in the media but knows just as well as you and I that while this isn't a championship team, it is a good team when everyone is healthy.
I'd hire John Lucas as coach, then bring in Moses Malone to work with the big men and Mario Elie to be assistant coach. After that he could hire whoever else to fill in his coaching staff preferably ex Rockets.
I seriously doubt he'll be quitting. If he did, the last coach I'd want is a flake like Brown. Jackson can stay away too.
I don't think he'll quit. I hope he doesn't quit. I love the guy. But, if he does, baby, let's go outside the box: Charles Barkley. C'mon. It'd be fun!
CB: If you guys can play inspirational basketball like Juwan and Ryan, I will kiss your monkey's ass.
I'm not ready to give up on JVG yet, but if he does leave for any reason, I'm with the Phil Jackson bunch. But I don't think that will happen- he's getting 10 mil a year plus 'incentives' from the owner's hot daughter. My second choice would be Junkyard Dog, Mario Ellie, with 'Special Consultant' Rudy T on the side.
First, I don't think Van Gundy is going anywhere, and I am very thankful for that. But in response to those posters who are pulling for Larry Brown, I strongly suggest that you watch some Knicks games. While I am a huge Rockets fan, my wife is a huge Knicks fan; so we watch almost all of both teams' games on league pass. The Knicks have completely quit on that guy. Seriously, look at how much talent is on that roster. Compared to some playoff teams like Grizzlies and Hornets, they have a ridiculous amount of talent. But Larry has never established a consistent rotation, consistently brow beats everyone on the team, and generally ignores the talent that he has in trying to turn them into the Pistons, who they definitely are not. In watching the Knicks this year, I have no idea how Larry Brown has succeeded in the past. Its really been some of the worst coaching I've ever seen. I think he must have lost his grip and would never want him with the Rockets.
I'd like to see JVG succeed. If that doesn't happen, I'd like to see the Rox give Tom Thibodeau, Mario Ellie, Rick Majerus, Calvin Murphy, Hubie Brown, Larry Brown, Roy Williams, or Jon Barry offers at the job. If none of them take it, I'd gladly give it a shot.
One thing I would like to add is if JVG does not quit, maybe we can atleast add an offensive specialist to the assistant coaching staff. My pick would be someone who has been the expert on a particular offensive scheme, such as Coach Pitre with the Princeton offense. JVG is a great defensive coach but sometimes I don't think there is anyone there to balance him out.
