why do people think that us vegetarians don't appreciate food?

whenever i eat salads, people tell me that's not a meal!

people look down on me b/c i dislike meat... but i don't look down on others for liking meat and those who don't even like vegetables!

come on, open your mind folks! vegetables and fruit can be just as tasty as a slab of animal meat! its all about the spices and herbs!

Let Vegetarians be vegetarians and Omnivores eat meat.

There are groups of Eskimos that have over 90% of their diet as meat, and they don't have the same problems normally associated with excessive meat eaters.

There vegetarians who found that they are in much better health, feel better, and have a clearer conscience etc.

That's fine too. I just think each group should live and let live.

Personally I eat meat. It's only natural and I'm at the top of the food chain.

Remember the words of the great Troy McClure...

"Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd eat you and everyone you care about!"

We need meat eaters to keep cows from taking over the world...

Of course, there are some vegetarians who do try to push their lifestyle on others, or at least look down on those who choose a different eating style. But yeah, I'm sure it happens the other way far more often.

That's kind of a common thing, though, even in areas beyond food choices. In Mike Nelson's new book (Mind Over Matters), he has a short essay illustrating something similar. Funny article. I say, "check it out."

Simply said, there are times when we, as people, can't believe others actually prefer to live in a way that is contrary to our own. It surprises us that they have different preferences, and we sometimes ascribe those different preferences to reasons different than the true reasons (i.e. if you don't like red meat, a person might think, "Well, if she tries my wonderful recipe, she'll like red meat. She just hasn't had the proper red meat experience yet.") or they ascribe it to a phase you're going through (Sure, she's a vegetarian now, but she'll grow out of that).

Well, turns out that wasn't so simply said, but whatever......

Just trying to see what the world would be like without meat eaters and to be silly.

I doubt there would be ranches/etc. for cattle without a food market for them and I don't know if they are still alive in the wild. Maybe not extinct, but would be a smaller number of cattle.

Cattle are not very energy efficient and thus consume 7 times (not sure on this figure but its something around here) as much energy as they give out. Humans eating from a more energy efficient food would reduce the amount of crops, specifically corn, needed to sustain the human population. Surplus corn and other surplus crops could be used to make ethanol (ethanol from corn is a petroleum alternative), beer, etc at a larger quantity and would thus lower the prices on gas, beer.

I have no idea how a major crop change would affect the Environment, but I recall something about protein rich plants being bad for the land.

Humans, specifically Americans, eating healthier would cause a strain on a lot of things as life expectancies would increase.

Just being a little silly with what would happen if there was a big shift in the diet of the average man outside of the individual. I don't care if someone is a vegan or not as long as they don't infringe on my eating habits.

I just remembered that I did a t.v. interview for Baylor College of Medicine last year about being a vegetarian during the holidays. Here's the link:
    http://www.bcmhealthline.net/ctvhlissue.cfm?issue_id=1201

The story is called "Vegetarian Holiday." I'm the one in the gray sweater making stir-fry. Yum!

    Very cool, RB!

I must say that while I am still a meat eater, I do enjoy a Boca Burger and salad for lunch instead of the leftover dinners from the night before. It lowers (slightly) the meat content I eat, while reducing the amount of food we cook in the evening.

    1. I don't eat meat.
    2. I have a huge love for food.
    3. I can outcook any one of you.
    4. I rarely eat salads.
    5. I don't do dairy, either...but can eat good desserts whenever I want (cake, cookies, etc).

I don't care that other people eat meat, but I can get annoyed at misperceptions.

Why is it that all of these Baywatch "babes" with an IQ of 60 seem to be vegetarians?

It's a super easy recipe that uses tofu instead of the usual eggs and condensed milk. It gives the pie a custard-like consistency. Mr. JB is HUGE fan of pumpkin pies and this is his favorite. He won't even eat the non-tofu kind anymore. Here's the recipe:

    Pumpkin Pie

    1 1/4 pounds soft tofu
    1 16-ounce can pumpkin puree
    3/4 cup maple syrup
    3/4 cup sugar
    1/3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1 teaspoon ground ginger
    1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 9-inch unbaked pie shell (we usually get frozen ones from Whole Foods)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Blend all the ingredients for the filling in a blender or food processor until smooth. Pour the mixture into the unbaked pie shell. Bake for 30 minutes, then turn the oven to 350 degrees and bake for another 30 to 45 minutes until the filling is set.

I find the pie really tastes the best after spending a couple of hours in the fridge. Also, I usually substitute a product called Sucanat (natural sugar cane also from whole Foods) for the sugar. But it works great either way.

    Sorry, but fruits and vegetables??

As Col. Crap would say, "Arghhhhhhh!!!"

    I'll gladly pass.

I will say this though....Jeff and Mrs. JB remind me of Paul and Linda McCartney except that Mrs. JB is obviously still alive (not to sound insensitive that LM is dead).

I'm with BK on this one.

Wow, I guess I'll stop eating meat. Otherwise, I might **** alot for a couple of days.

Sorry, but nothing is as good as fat juicy steaks, or fat juicy hamburgers, or Texadelphia Cheesesteaks, or beef enchiladas, or chicken caesar salad, or Rudy's BBQ or countless other great meat meals.

Humans were meant to be omnivores. Just look at our teeth. We have teeth for both meat and veggies. That says it all right there.

I have several lifelong friends that have been vegan for quite awhile, and I can tell you not eating meat has nothing to do with whether your food is 'bland' or not. Some of the most delicious and delicate foods I've ever had were made without meat. There are more non-meat ingredients than there are meats after all.

Mrs JB, I think it does suck that you experience the militant meat eaters, but it shouldn't suprise you that they feel 'threatened' by vegetarians. While you may not 'push' your vegetarianism on people, there are plenty that do. I don't know if they're an extremely vocal minority of vegetarians, but I suspect they are not really a minority voice. Look at the title of this thread. (At least some) vegetarians assume it is self evident that to eat meat is immoral/unhealthy/stupid. That point of view is often presented in a most condecending manner, as if anyone intelligent wouldn't eat meat. In the end, even if you believe that, no one is going to be convinced by the argument 'you must be stupid if you're not vegetarian.' I guess you unfairly get the backlash for that.

i didn't mean for the title of this thread to have any implications about meat eaters or non-meat eaters... i really couldn't care less what anyone else does, as long as they're happy with their choices...

i was just trying to come up with a quick title on the go... and after seeing bingham in that getup... well if you don't want to "eat lettuce" then nothing will "turn you on" to veggies! :D

again, sorry if i offended anyone here.

honestly...who cares?? you eat what you want to eat...i'll eat what i want to eat...i'll pay for my meal..you pay for yours...i could care less what my friends order to eat...i just want them at my table because they're my friends....

i must say, though..when i went to lunch with jeff one day, i was kinda worried that my meat-eating habits might offend him. turns out it was the excessive belching at the table that really offended him! :)

You know, something that pisses me off is when vegetarians come to me preaching the virtues of not eating meat. (Just happened to me yesterday, too) I don't care about they're eating habits, so why are they so damn concerned with mine. Usually when they tell me I shouldn't eat meat I just respond with "Why the **** do you care what i eat?" Usually its obvious I'm getting pissed so they leave me alone. Man, go take that sh*t to Fear Factor. They're up there eating ****ing unborn baby ducks, and you're bothering me? Bastards...(not all veg-heads, just the ones who don't know how to leave me the hell alone  )

    Without meat, vegtables ain't sh*t.

    Oh yeah, I forgot, IMHO.
