I guess you don't know much about Rockets history. Do you remember the late 80s? We had to face those damn Mavs - Aguirre, Davis, Blackman, etc. They were dirty and always found someway to kick us out of the playoffs. Hated those bastards. I respect them, but them being the Mavericks, I will always hate them. I rather root for the Spurs, Suns, or Pistons. Never the Mavs.
Die Mavs, DIE. And you, sir, have made yourself a pariah forever on these boards for daring to express love for that vilest of franchises, right in our faces.
One cold day one of my female friends offered to let me wear her Mavericks jacket. I told her I'd rather freeze. She knows I cant stand the Mavs. If the Rockets dont make the playoffs then I'm pulling for the Pistons. I have no problem towards the Spurs either.
You can like other players, I think KG is a great guy and I loved Mark Price back in the day. But you only have one team. Anytime the Cavs came to town, I was looking for Price to have a great game in a losing effort. If you want to be a Spurs fan, cool. But don't call the Rockets your team if you're wearing a Duncan jersey at BW3 come May. It's the "rooting" part, especially in regards to a rival that you can't do. What would you think of a UNC student rooting for Duke in March once the Tarheels are knocked out? A Celtics guy rooting for Isiah in '88? A Cowboys fan pulling for the Skins in 91? Again, if that's who you want to see win, fine. But you're not a full-blooded Rockets fan if you do. Evan
If the Rockets don't make the playoffs, then please let any team other than the Mavs win it. I think I speak for most Rocket fans. You don't root for the mavs when the rockets go out. That's just f-ing wrong.
Again, you aren't rooting for someone over your team if your team is eliminated. Why watch the playoffs if we don't make it if that is the case....
Actually, I have no problem rooting for the Mavericks. As long as they get rid of the players that I can't stand. 1. First one that has to go is Jason Terry. Those ridiculous gestures any time he hits any kind of shot. Hey, Jason, when you actually make the all-star team, win a championship, or do anything worthwhile in the NBA, then talk. 2. Then Erick Dampier. 2nd best center. 2nd best knucklehead is more like it. 3. Josh Howard goes, too. Cheap shot on Yao. I'll always be grateful to Sura for his retaliation. 4. Stackhouse must perish, as well. Bad attitude. 5. Devin Harris? Yes, I think he would have to leave, too. 6. Marquis Daniels? I apologize for saying this, but he just scares me looking at him. Just impossible to have him on there and root for the Mavs at the same time. 7. Adrian Griffin can stay. 8. Avery Johnson's a keeper. 9. Diop? Nope, get him out of there, too. 10. Dirk? Actually, don't have a problem with him. He walks the walk. Oh, and Cuban would have to go, and they'd have to move the team out of Dallas, and they would have to change the name (something like Aardvarks). So, to sum, I would root for the Kansas City Aardvarks coached by Avery Johnson and with Dirk and Adrian as the forwards, with 10 different players and a new owner. Until that day, I can't help but hate that team with a passion, and I'd rather gouge my eyes out than watch that group and their girly owner.
That was ONE series. ONE. Rivalry??????? No one ever cared about the Mavs until 6 years ago and since then they became a team that you HAD to care about. I'm sorry if I think they've paid their dues. Don't tell me what kind of fan I am. You don't know me. You can't root for other teams when they don't concern the rockets? You mean to tell me no one on this board has done that? FINE, they might not have been the mavs BUT on the issue of loyalty it's dumb to think that a fan should hate every other team all the time.
It's not about "rooting" for another team. It's about preference. If we're not in the playoffs, there have to be some teams you'd prefer to win over others. For example, in 1997, I wanted the Bulls to take the Jazz out. I didn't want Karl Malone to ever feel the happiness of winning a championship. Does that make me any less a Rockets fan just because I had a preference of one team over another? Does that make me a bandwagon fan?
Dude, I'm not talking about just playoff series. How do you know if anyone cared about the Mavs until 6 years go? I have always followed them because they were our I-45 rivals. They were always in the way whenever we were fighting for the playoffs. I don't care what kind of fan you are. But you are posting a GO MAVS thread on a Rockets fan site. You didn't think you were going to get flamed? Any other team, maybe. But the Mavs are the devil as you can tell from your fellow BBS mates. Take your GO MAVS crap here: http://www.mavsforum.com/
Being a fan is about passion, about love and hatred. If you don't love a team with a passion and hate at least one team with a passion, you have not experienced real fanhood. Obviously, the Rockets is the team I love with a passion. Whoever is playing against them is my enemy. The Lakers is the team I hate with a passion. Whoever is playing against them is my second favorite team at that time. Other than these two teams, I pretty much follow (positively and negatively) players (and coaches) rather than teams. I like the Pistons and the Clippers this year because I like their players. I hate Miami because I can't stand Shaq and Riley. I don't like the Knicks because I don't like Marbury and Larry Brown. I never quite understand the inter-state rivalry. I don't like the Mavs not because they are in Texas but because they are a bunch of floppers and whiners. I like the Spurs to a certain extent mainly because I like Duncan. But I hate Ginobili's flopping too.
How can you root for a team that humiliated us in game 7 last year, in the worst playoff blowout in history? And then came down here when we were down in the dumps with a bunch of scrubs starting and no bench, humiliated us again in the same manner and then Dirk Softiski opens his pie hole and mutters "injuries are no excuse, you have to come to play"? I have never truly hated a sports franchise like I hate the Mavs.
I've hated the Jazz and Sonics in the past more than I hate the Mavs now, and I hate the Spurs just as much right now. The Lakers rivalry never really developed for me, I guess cause it was always really a close series and it was (and is) hard to hate Shaq since he respects Yao and Dream. (And is friends w/Tmac now, but that didn't matter back then) I don't like Kobe, but I respect his game.. So now it's the Spurs and the Mavs. A rivalry develops, at least partially, when you feel you are wronged by a team. With Cuban's bs with the moving picks, as well as talking in the press...with the out of bounds stuff...and all the other crap.. (as well as having a 2-0 lead at a time)...I think we all felt wronged in that series, whether we're right or not.
