If the Rockets signed Melo, would you still want Parsons?

If Rockets sign Melo, would you want Parsons to remain?

  1. Yes, Parsons is still a great role player.

  2. No. Wouldn't want to pay a 4th option that much, and Melo can't defend 4's.

If the Rockets sign Melo, the lineup would be :

    Bev
    Harden
    Parsons
    Melo
    Howard

Here's the thing - I wouldn't want Parsons if Morey landed Melo. For one, he'd be getting paid 8-10 million to be the 4th option, which I wouldn't be comfortable with.

And secondly, and perhaps most importantly, Melo wouldn't be able to defend the PF's in the playoffs such as Duncan, Dirk, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Blake Griffin.

I'd rather ship out Parsons and finally sign a good PF with length/size.

    Thoughts?

If we sign Melo we will have $0 cap room to do anything except sign Parsons back using our bird rights.
I do agree though our post depth is frighteningly bad. After Dwight Howard you have Terrence Jones, Powell, and Motiejunas in there.

    Lets sign Melo first.

But yes, I would rather trade Parsons for a PF, at the same time i think it's unlikely we could get equal value in return when Parsons will most likely have a pretty unattractive contract after this free agency.

Yes, but wouldn't they be able to ship Parsons out - like a sign/trade?

Pretty sure at that point Parsons would just say screw this and accept the offer from the highest bidder forcing the Rockets to match or let him go.
Remember he has no obligation to the team, he's technically a free agent now.

Of course my knowledge of cap rules are limited, just wait for BimaThug to chime in.

Uhhh...why wouldn't you? Parsons as a 4th option is gold.

The Rockets wouldn't have any cap space to sign a "good PF with length and size" and Melo isn't worth max money as a SF.

Melo led a team of scrubs like Chauncy Billups, Nene, Kenyon Martin, and JR Smith to a first round exit. Of course he's worth max money. The guy is a textbook example of a player who has great stats and makes everyone around him worse. If the Rockets do get him, they will never win with him.

Lol those aren't scrubs, but yeah. He's definitely underrated (somehow) now.

Didn't the Knicks use Melo at the 4? I thought he was more effective there? Parsons was only given the starting position over Budinger because of his defense and not to mention he's a huge part of our team when it comes to ball movement. If possible I would sign Parsons to a 7-8 million/yearly deal and call it a day. He can always play off the bench and still get 30 minutes a game if the Rockets use Melo as a starter.

Even if we aren't able to sign another star free agent, we would be much improved if EVERYONE on our team played better help defense. If Harden plays better off the ball we would have less predictable plays and would likely succeed more often on offense as well. The other big what ifs are Asik/Lin, both of whom must be moved before we can start sniffing at possible cap space.

He probably played about 65% of his time at the 4, and was more effective as a 4 than a 3...at least per 82games.com

I think that speaks more to small-ball being increasingly effective than Melo being a better 4 generally... but that's the way of the NBA.

It is a valid question where you'd play him. But you'd clearly resign Parsons, and then ship him out later if necessary.

Yes. With another scorer Parsons can focus more energy on the defensive end.

Also he does so much moving without the ball, it makes him even more important with another ball stopper.

Yes I would. Parsons as your 4th best player is a VERY good thing.

I was more in favor of a deal for Love, but I'm thinking adding Melo and keeping Parsons is by far the best move. If possible of course.

Uh, no. Most teams would choose to play Melo at the 4, where he is a better player and does have an argument of being worth the max.

Why would you not want someone that was good when you go over the cap? We would all still want Parsons. We would all still also want someone better than Parsons over Parsons if presented with the opportunity.
